My wife said that it would take me an hour to get the digital version of this painting to the degree of finish I had gotten on the oil version. While I appreciate the optimism, this is a really involved piece.

Part of the original conceit behind directly paying homage to a classic painting was that it would allow me to more easily finish the dang thing. Instead, it's put me in a spot where I need to live up to Draper's immaculate work. It's fun, but it's not fast. Having the benefit of excellent reference for this piece makes it easier to a degree, but it also demands that I do a good job on it. That's hopefully pushing me to make this one of my best to date, but I was kind of hoping for a nice walk in the park since I need to finish a few more of these before I can wrap up The Book of Watchers.

One of the other things worth noting is the fact that I'm building this up from the digital study rather than a scan of the oil painting I made. I was expecting to photograph that work in progress and finish it up digitally. But, I have no experience of equipment to properly capture an oil painting at high resolution. Getting a clean picture of a board covered in shiny paint is a lot harder than you might think. After some failed attempts to both photograph and scan the thing, I just defaulted back to me traditional method of work.

The work in progress oil painting is really close to being done, so I want to finish it at some point. I've been referencing it at points to get to this point and I loved working on it, so it hasn't felt like a waste but dang. I really wanted to get one of these done in oils.
