This is the direction I saw this heading once the pieces started to come together. By flattening out the shadowed areas, rather than exclusively darkening them, I've been able to make them ambiguous while retaining enough contrast to make the piece readable. There has been a lot of pushing and pulling to strike the right balance with the values and that will likely continue until the end. Working digitally means not ever having a definitive method of seeing this balance in action. In the end, I usually have to make adjustments for viewing the piece on the web, on my printer and in other formats like dye sublimated mats.
As this piece comes together, I've been finding more and more places to exaggerate the saturated purple and blue colors throughout the upper part of the composition. Making more intentional choices about where detail is appearing as well as where color is appearing is proving as fun as always. That fun is translating into the visual interest this piece needs in order to thrive.
Having this piece mostly solved means that I'm getting very very close to wrapping up this whole series. That's really exciting!
Should have the final art on Discord sometime early next week.
