Often in my videos I talk about what has been changed since the incident to stop it from happening again. And, sure enough, the control systems of trains have changed a great deal since 1918. I didn't include that in this video, as few of the changes could be directly attributed to this incident... but I thought you'd find the systems we have nowadays interesting nonetheless.

For a while, trains were equipped with a "dead man's switch" in the form of a pedal which the driver had to keep constantly pressed down. If the driver was taken ill or fell asleep, they'd naturally let up on the pedal and the train would come to a stop.

This was good, but still vulnerable to drivers falling unconscious and slumping down onto the pedal... so now we also have "vigilance" systems. These consist of a buzzer which sounds every few minutes, and to which the driver must respond (either by hitting a switch or manipulating some other control mechanism). While still not 100% perfect, that sounds like a pretty foolproof system to me!

The Hammond Circus Train Wreck | A Short Documentary | Fascinating Horror

On the 22nd of June, 1918, the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus was on its way to its next scheduled performance in Hammond, Indiana. More than 300 labourers and circus performers were on board one of the circus’s two dedicated trains when it was forced to stop to deal with a mechanical issue. The vast majority of passengers were asleep, unaware entirely that another train was bearing down on them at full speed, and that in just a few minutes the Hagenback-Wallace Circus would suffer one of the worst tragedies it would ever endure. 00:00 - Intro 00:48 - History Of The Circus 02:30 - The Hammond Wreck 07:16 - The Cause Of The Crash 09:10 - Showmen's Rest I tell the true stories behind some of history's greatest disasters... but without sensationalism or disturbing imagery. Fascinating Horror is all about in-depth research, respectful storytelling, and learning what we can from the mistakes of the past. You might be surprised to discover just how much of today's world is shaped by long-forgotten disasters from decades gone by. As for the circus, funny how familiar things pop up in the most unlikely places. The founder of Hagenbeck's circus ( before he was bought up by Wallace) happens to be from my home town. Later he founded the local zoo in Hamburg, which still bears his name. The locals routinely shorten it to "Hagenbeck" and it has formed generations of children- to the point where there is an old popular song " Let's go to Hagenbeck"

Incredible - while researching I noticed that Hagenbeck had quite an interesting life and legacy. With these stories I frequently find myself wondering how certain people ended up. It's good to hear that his name is still out there, even all these years later.

That is good to hear. Ever since I learned about it, it's been a place I've wanted to visit. Maybe one day...
