Here from the review. I get a lot of the criticisms you have of the show but I think there's a disconnect between what is expected of the show and what the show is trying to do. I think the show is trying to portray Pakistani culture and Muslim culture in an accurate light to educate those who aren't too familiar with it while making it relatable for those who are within those cultures or have been exposed to it a lot. As a Muslim myself, I definitely feel the show is being a bit harsh on Muslim culture in a lot of ways, but I also think it shows more perspectives than Kamala and her friend. For example, her brother is clearly a by-the-book Muslim. He's got the big beard, he's always in religious attire, he reads the Quran and makes Dua, etc. etc. And most importantly, he's NOT portrayed in a bad light. If anything he's one of the most reasonable characters in the show. he's shown to be a trusting guy with the whole cousin thing, he's the only one in Kamala's family who was okay with her going to begin with, etc. Another thing is Kamala and her friend - for some Muslim women, the hijab is very important to them while to others its something they can take or leave, and Kamala only wears hijab when she's required to (in Mosque), but nowhere else. But her friend is always seen with a headscarf of some kind, but neither are presented as "wrong" for how they go about things which again is a very positive message for Muslim girls in particular. And for the criticisms Kamala and her friend have about the mosque, I don't get the vibe they don't want to be Muslim, but rather they want to change their culture which is fitting considering there's also a generation and gender difference involved with those who are running the mosque. And the fact that Bruno seems to show a decent amount of knowledge of Islam and is partaking in some of the culture like Eid gives the impression to young Muslim kids that their faith is a lot more accessible than it is oppressive. Ultimately the religion of Islam is shown in a positive light far more than its shown in a negative one and that's the best balance since it can't just be a 100% perfect display. As for the MCU tie-in aspect of it all, I think it goes back to the Pakistani cultural aspect. The partition is a very sensitive topic that would be lessened if the writers just slapped on a MCU-tie in to it. Like its cool to see a lot of that for the historical stuff like in Eternals for why certain myths are the way they are, but the partition is a fairly recent thing that happened in history and its one which should be shown in its honest light as a bad time for India/Pakistan/Bangladesh. Its like how we are exposed to WW2 through Captain America but don't get into the nitty gritty of how the Holocaust happened. It would be mad if the cause of the Holocaust was Mephisto or something. Or what if the Atlantic slave trade was MCU-ified? Some parts of history are just not suitable for that stuff and by having every major historical event have a magical tie-in that created said event ironically serves to make the world feel smaller. Sometimes history should just be history. Falcon and the Winter Soldier got that right with the whole theme of racism in America. We get Isaiah Bradley's story and that story is very accurate to what the US government was on with testing drugs and such on black people. It educates people on what America was like during those times while also having a character's story be told within that history. So far it looks the same with Kamala's family and how the partition affected them. TBH this show is actually a much better Hawkeye. It hasn't tried to give off a serious tone to it that it failed to execute like Hawkeye did with Yelena, Ronin, Kingpin, Maya, etc. Its a bit like Spider-Man Homecoming where the story is very innocent, childish and low stakes.
