I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility that the powerful in Valyria kept secrets about magic from their colonies. The kind of secrets the sorcerers of Gogossos wouldn’t be aware of. One reason is to keep a monopoly on power so that the colonies of Valyria wouldn’t grow powerful enough to contest Valyria. Another reason would be to stop the creation of diseases such as the Red Death and even cures to such diseases if they existed. Using this reasoning I believe that the Valyrians restricted the type of magic the colonies used and once Valyria was gone Gogossos was free to delve into these forbidden knowledge.

Very good episode, the first I heard since I became a patreon. I am surely not the first, or last to point this out. But George’s red death has some curious similarities with Edgar Allen Poe’s The masque of the red death.
