Dear FGU users,

I went to setup Tuesday’s map in Fantasy Grounds, excited that you guys could finally have the animated maps, and learned that it only accepts .webm files with a decade old codec 8 whereas all of my .webm files are on the current codec 9.

I have gotten assistance in altering my map converting script to now also make a codec 8 version.  Be warned that this older version is both larger in size and lower in quality.  The alt maps and animated posts from today forward will now have a separate .zip file for these, clearly labeled as V8 and FGU.

I had hoped you guys could use all the .webm files currently on the patreon in FGU, but it seems it won’t be that easy.  I have no plans to retroactively convert years of files to this format, however I found this thread of people converting for FGU that you may find useful if you want to use some of the previously posted .webm maps.

Convert to .webm v8

If anyone has another converting method let me know and I will update this post.

So in summary: posts from Tuesday onward that have .webm animated map versions will have a separate V8 FGU zip with .webm in that format.  Posts before this date will need you to convert to work in FGU.

That's very fair to consider FG and also individuals that have lower spec computers or limited bandwidth. There are a few ways to convert to WebM VP8. Shutter Encoder is another great option which also offers batch processing and editing of the short video files such as color etc. https://www.shutterencoder.com/en/ https://youtu.be/iix-HBEJ9R4 The quality of conversion varies from artist to artist, but in general the quality is degraded. How much quality loss depends on size, original source, and the settings. Map size and pixels per inch come into play as you know about already. Not sure why VP8 WEBM was picked over VP9, but it might have to do with overall file size and the sharing of data across varying networks that may not have enough bandwidth or ability to handle larger and more files. As lower spec computers and low bandwidth networks slowly upgrade, maybe they will add support for higher quality files? Some tips if anyone is interested in converting to VP8, in case. Make sure that you enable the alpha channel for things like tokens and transparency layers. Maps don't usually have a transparent layer to worry about. Also, remove any audio channels, if any. Even if there is no audible sound, some movie files still have a silent audio track. Removing the sound will reduce the overall file size a little bit too. Best of luck and happy gaming.

The higher quality v9 is actually significantly smaller in file size. But alas. I hope the FGU people can make this work.

Thanks for your support of Fantasy Grounds. The VP8 restriction is due to the environment FGU is written in and the editor within Unity multi-platform doesn't support VP9 unfortunately.

it's because of unity. It only supports v8. I can recommend Handbreak. Batch import all the files and ecnode to v9. Really quick and easy.
