The next release will include a lot of internal changes to support female NPCs, but probably without them appearing in the actual game as the appropriate scenes won't be ready.

While you won't see the benefit from a lot of that work straight away, I've gone quite far in overhauling the clothing system to support what will hopefully be more-or-less sensible outfit creation for npcs, and this has some possibilities for improvements that I hope you'll enjoy.

The release after that will center around adding a suitable scene for female NPCs to appear in and I expect the one following will also build on this. Once female NPCs are available properly as friends and can be interacted with I'll look to improve friendship content with socialisation possibilities that'll be available with friends of either sex.
