Where I live, there are actually festivals all over the general city area throughout the year, but in my opinion, public health and safety have made some of them less fun than they used to be. The annual barbecue competition used to allow free samples until, just as the joke implies, somebody got really sick and they couldn't figure out where the illness came from! After that, the competition became more about the competition and less about the free samples, and attendance dropped off pretty dramatically.

It still sets up every year, but I haven't seen them set up a live stage nor carnival rids since they took those free samples away.
