Advertisers should be seeing a pattern by now with the kind of content that gets promoted: it's usually low budget, fast to produce, aimed at young audiences, and vaguely controversial so that it gets talked about and thus promoted elsewhere. In other words, the Paul problem is still happening right now on other popular channels and it's going to happen again. I've gone through this song and dance, talking about Youtube, so today I spice it up with some talk about the idealistic theory behind Youtube's system. Namely, the theory of emergence, which hopes to find the best content by examining what people watch - and why Youtube's weighting of the metrics has pulled us away from video people normally enjoy to create these entire new, often dysfunctional, forms of entertainment.
