oh my gosh. what to even say about this episode?!?! THIS WAS FUCKING AMAZING!! HOLY SHIIIIT!!!!! i'm never going to get over this episode. EVER!!!! most definitely one of my favorite episodes of buffy! do i dare say my favorite episode....? mayhaps i do.

Love this episode so much! Missed it initially when watching Buffy on Sky (British satellite TV). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds had a musical episode recently (Subspace Rhapsody) too, first heard about it on a Buffy forum and thought it was a joke.

The thing about Buffy's "positive" lyrics in "Give me Something" is that they are sung in a robotic, monotone voice. The message in her performance of those lines is that they are generic platitudes that people just say to sound positive but don't truly mean anything deeper. On a more subtle note, the "rousing" solo Buffy has in the Magic Box near the beginning of the episode ("What can't we face whan we're together") is in fact more platitudes for her. I didn't catch that on my first watch but when rewatching I got that she is just saying what is expected of her, another one of her "inspiring speeches", but there is no heart behind it. She's on autopilot.
