So, they pair Xander with Cordelia and you don't like it and then Xander and Faith and you don't like it...what is going to make you happy!!?? ;) You are SO right about it basically just being The Pack part 2 so I too get annoyed with this episode as it's just a retread and I'd like the show to give Xander so more freaking layers! The excluding him from the danger comes over as forced and not in character. Over the years though I have reconciled with the fact that I don't get to see the big adventure and whatever the 'bravest thing I've ever seen' was :/ I definitely get why you're a bit frustrated about the lack of consequences from the last episode and, yeah, I think most people feel that way. HOWEVER, I don't think they're in a totally happy place. Their only one-on-one conversation was IMO a little strained. When Buffy says she doesn't want the details Giles just goes with that, in the past he would probably have said how important the details are or at least look a tad disapproving, but nothing. Also, his wardrobe, he's in a SWEATER!!!!!! He's lost the three piece suit. Significantly, I think, it comes back when he's been trying to phone the watchers council and when things get seriously but we have NEVER seen Giles looking this casual lol Also, the jelly doughnuts. He says that everybody knows they're his favourite, my head canon is that Xander got extra to cheer him up about being fired. Willow ate one of the four and then sat there and watched Buffy eat three. I think that's why she ratted on Buffy, I think she was shocked. I know it seems like I'm making a lot out of doughnuts BUT Giles is pretty bloody annoyed up to the point when Willow tells him it was Buffy when he is immediately 'that's OK, Xander can get more'. I don't think Buffy is doing it consciously particularly but it feels a bit passive aggressive to me and it seems like Giles is OK with her eating every one of his favourite doughnuts until she finally forgives him.

You're misremembering what happened in The Pack. The kid who refused to narc on the bullies in that episode wasn't Xander.

Just imagine the most cliche and derivative-of-previous-episodes events and dialogue possible, and you'll get to see the "big adventure." That's how the apocalypse plotline in this episode is constructed. It's, y'know, a parody.
