'Too Big' for Steam Deck is back! Remnant 2 pushes PC hardware to brutal limits thanks to Unreal Engine 5, Nanite and virtual shadow maps, while Ratchet and Clank's DirectStorage and heavy graphics requirements can also challenge a range of PC hardware. And yet both games are Steam Deck Verified... so just how well do they run on Valve's handheld? Oliver Mackenzie reports on a game of two halves.

I appreciate the video! It would be interesting to see a comparison video of these games on the ROG Ally versus the Steam Deck. For me, Ratchet and Clank runs pretty fine at 35-40fps at upscaled 1080p (IGTI, Balanced) on my Ally, when set to 25W. And that's during graphically intense scenes. Simple traversal can sometimes be a good bit higher (like nearly 60fps!). Graphics settings are in the mediumish range, with traffic, hair, and weather set to low, and depth of field turned off. texture filtering is at 16x, ambient occlusion set to SSAO, and most of the other settings are set to medium/on. Also, I have my Ally's VRAM set to 6GB. Seems to limit the amount of VRAM stutters I encounter from the game just craving more VRAM. I haven't tried going higher with the VRAM, but lower allocations of VRAM definitely have more stutter. I haven't tried out Remnant 2, but if I had to guess, I'd think the ROG Ally could run upscaled 720p in that game pretty decently. I'm hoping my ROG Ally can survive this upcoming wave of Unreal Engine 5 games, particularly in games that utilize lumen and/or nanite, but we will see!
