Rich, Alex and Oliver sit down for the latest DF Direct Weekly, discussing the controversial move for Microsoft to ship Redfall at 30fps with a performance mode to follow, along with confirmation that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justive League is getting a length delay. The team muse over the implications of Cyberpunk 2077's RT Overdrive changing the face of PC graphics in future games, while the third - and last - Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer is also discussed. Do we still think it's 'too big for Switch'...?

Note: It was inevitable, but yet another TLOUp1 PC patch 'dropped' after we recorded this Direct. We'll take a look at it and decide whether the segment is fine as is, requires reshooting, or we may just drop it completely by the time the video goes public on Monday depending on workload and availability of team members.

Thrilled to see my question discussed here!! Though, I should clarify that I didn’t intend to suggest that 30fps would be suitable for all games, Redfall likely being an example. I’m more concerned about a future where developers may be discouraged from offering 30fps quality modes on console, which would be quite disappointing as somebody who generally prefers fidelity over performance. To Alex’s point about how games shouldn’t try to imitate film, I mostly agree, but my appreciation of this look largely comes from my background with cinematography. I think 24fps with the standard 1/50 shutter speed looks really beautiful in motion. An interactive experience certainly couldn’t match it with precise controls, but when they get close, I think it’s a pretty special thing. Thank you again for the always thoughtful conversation, and have a lovely weekend! 😁

Wouldn’t it be lovely if more Internet commentary was as thoughtful, well written and polite as this?
