Hey everyone, welcome back to Digital Foundry after the extended holiday weekend. This update is a little later than usual - even factoring in the public holiday - as various projects were tying up yesterday morning and the #content meeting wasn't held until the end of the day! The uninterrupted streak of videos we've been putting out continues today as a pretty big embargo lifts, but here's how things are shaping up for the rest of the week and beyond.

* Alex is getting to work on the extended deep dive into Cyberpunk 2077's RT Overdrive mode, principally to answer the question: how did we go from path-traced renditions of decades-old titles to a PT rendition of one of the most technologically advanced games of the modern era?

* John is working on another smaller DF Retro episode that'll roll out first to Retro tier supporters. It's based on a little-known PS2 title called Ikusagami - or Demon Chaos in PAL territories. Why concentrate on this one? Well... its engine can render 65,000 enemies on-screen simultaneously - at 60fps. And that's the image you're seeing above. John's taking a well-earned break after this and will complete work on the major Road Rash DF Retro episode on his return.

* Oliver is wrapping up production on the enhancements added to Resident Evil 4 across platforms in its recent patch. Capcom has responded to some of our critiques! And added some more content in the form of Mercenaries mode. That'll be coming soon, after which he'll be tackling Ghostwire: Tokyo on Xbox Series consoles.

* Tom is looking at Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp on Nintendo Switch, and after that will move onto another project. Minecraft Legends, perhaps?

* Rich continues to rebuild our GPU benchmark database in preparation for the arrival of new graphics hardware - and you should start to see the fruits of that labour sooner rather than later.

* Will is working on a bunch of written articles for Eurogamer, kicking off with a look at just how powerful those ubiquitous RTX 3060 gaming laptops actually are - you know, the ones that are literally always on sale. He's also looking at Corsair's Xeneon Flex foldable OLED!

Is there anything you else you feel we should be looking at? Any games you'd like to see or topics we should be covering? Please comment and share your thoughts and we'll give it our attention!

In the meantime, we hope you have a fantastic (rest of the) week!

All is fine as long as John gets a proper amount of time to review Tears of the Kingdom when he comes back. :)

Gpu benchmark for cyberpunk overdrive. Especially curious if ser makes a difference on 40 series cards(aside from dlss3 of course) and 30 series viability (and arc a770?) at lower resolutions. Also previous direct mentioned nvidia improving its ultra performance dlss(super resolution) specifically for cyberpunk overdrive. Great to see if that changes that makes dlss ultra performance a better option. Also, does rdna3 stand a chance?

"wtf is that image?" .... "oh. 65000 on screen enemies. nice!"

"how did we go from path-traced renditions of decades-old titles to a PT rendition of [cyberpunk]" This is the WRONG question. Alex has been told in multiple interviews with developers that path tracing's difficulty is orthogonal to what the rays are tracing against (ie polygon counts). This was explicitly stated by an Nvidia developer in the Minecraft RTX interview as well as something John Carmack has stated for a long time, going back to an interview with Ryan Shrout in 2008. Quake 2 and Minecraft were chosen for their open source and modifiable nature, not their low polygon counts, despite what many assume and what Alex has asserted.

I would also like to see a lower than 4k benchmark run, especially since the very technically dense (yet bizarrely beside the point) and somewhat misguided Gamers Nexus video about it. Don't get me wrong, I love Steve and his team (have been watching since 2015/16?), but this time it felt they didn't really grasp the real impact on the overall visuals. They got their benchmarks, which everyone wants to see (I guess, for some reason), but it would be nice to see more about Alex and Johns impressions when you don't have a 4090 lying around. With a 3070 - in 1080p - I see some potential to run it at 30 fps capped =) So it's not unobtainium, it's just like we expected: Rly rly heavy.

Then again, it’s still easy for someone not in the know to think that the complexity of path tracing goes up with the visual complexity, so it’s still a question worth answering

Oh shit! An Ikusagami DF retro? Definitely watching. Was interested in that since I was a little kid.

Would love to see coverage on the final fantasy pixel remasters console release if there’s any time for it. Any plans to cover Horizon Burning Shores perhaps if there’s any improved tech in it over the base game? Any highlights from the Nvidia GTC? Being that E3 is canceled, are there any other noteworthy in person game-related expos/conferences that you guys are thinking to attend in person this year?

Thanks for all your incredible hard work, all.

Tom should do Octopath Traveler 2
