Hi everyone, Rich here, deeply immersed in that most fulfilling of tasks - GPU benchmarking. There's a lot going on at Digital Foundry at the moment, with team members fully immersed in projects to run over this week and the next, but DF Direct Weekly filming will be happening either tomorrow or Friday.

We'll be discussing the various rumours for the new PlayStation Portable - though to be clear, we've heard absolutely nothing about it. We'll also be discussing further fallout of The Last of Us Part 1, new expansion cards for Xbox and more.

Want to have a particular topic raised on the show? Do let us know. Want to have a question answered in our Supporter Q+A section? Well now's your chance to put forward your suggestions in the convenient box below. Thanks, as always, for your input!

PSVR2 has had a slow start, and now Sony is reportedly working on a 'PS5 Pro' and a new Wii U GamePad-esque peripheral. What's the DF team's take on Sony's current hardware push? Is this the right direction for the industry and do you see these products being successful? Are you interested in owning them?

Sony, you can have this name for free: PSwitch5. What does a perfect handsheld (that's not a typo, they always take two hands) mean to you? Is it pocketable in normal pants or does it require JNCOs like the Steam Deck? Does it fold? Does it do tate by flipping the screen? Build it! Dream it!

Greetings dear DF Team! A Topic i have been wondering about in particular, is the number one choice of gaming peripheral you prefer to use while enjoying videogames. Personally, i'm very fond of the Dualshock 3, how about you guys?

We've seen a variety of handheld competitors come out, from the well known PSP and Game Gear to lesser known Atari Lynx, Tiger's Game.com, and Nokia NGage. Yet, Nintendo is the only one that does consistently well in the market. What do you think others could copy from Nintendo to see more success in the portable market? Also, what ideas, if any, would you like Nintendo to implement from other handheld consoles that they aren't currently?

2 weeks since your video about re4 remake and it's problems (3, if you count the demo video). absolute radio silence and no patches from capcom so far. did you contact them or have they responded to you at all?

Given that Richard is a big fan of Emperor Palpatine, could he give a fair tech review of Jedi: Survivor (given that he would likely enjoy seeing Cal Kestis suffer)?

Do you ultimately think the best storage solution moving forward for the Xbox Series consoles would be for Microsoft to offer a CFexpress adapter where you can insert your own NVMe drive? Even with the competition between Western Digital and Seagate, there's still the expensive 2230 form factor, numerous middlemen that need their cut, and licensing costs. PS5-compatible drives provide double the capacity at the same price or the same capacity at half the price (or less!) of the expansion drives. Something has got to give.

Hi all- Now that all the x3d reviews are out it seems like they all can provide great performance while keeping power relatively lower in many titles. Are there certain characteristics of games & engines that benefit most from the extra cache? Is extra cpu cache something that future apus / dedicated gaming consoles could benefit from as well? Helping battery life of future steam decks or other pc handhelds, etc. Thanks

Alan

Hi DF Team, Question for Richard, have you opened your PSVR2 yet, if so what game did you play first?

Ednamode

It would be great if you could cover the announcement of asus ally. All the people wanting a steam deck 2 with the new phoenix APUs might have just got what they wanted.

Hello DF! New to the whole patreon thing, but I have been watching and enjoy your content for many years now. Question is: With The Last of Us Part 1, Spider-Man and other titles requiring a lot of CPU horsepower to decompress assets the way PS5 is doing it with the fast SSD and predefined hardware, what would be the best way for developers to deal with this problem moving forward? Would technologies such as DirectStorage help alleviate this problem to a certain degree?

Hello DF, Imagine you are a small game development studio and you are in the planning stages for your new open world game set in a destroyed urban city environment. Your proposed mission design calls for a good mix of indoor and outdoor areas. You are considering two options for what is the best way to handle the lighting for your new game: 1) Rely on traditional rasterization techniques, like in TLOU PT1 Remake. This will have a high development cost but will be able to target the widest range of devices possible. 2) Go for a fully RT solution like in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition. This will cut development costs drastically but will also drastically limit your customer base. What option would you go for and why? Thank you, тяσg

If Sony is creating a new handheld, do you think they should forgo creating an entirely new platform, and instead utilize the existing PS4 ecosystem? It seems reasonable that AMD could make an APU for them that could be 99% compatible with existing PS4 games. And wouldn't that save devs a lot of work by working on a platform they're already familiar with, making it more appealing to 3rd parties?

With Twitter now in shambles and many users fleeing the platform, don't you think it's time DF got some alternative means of communicating? Do any of you have Mastodon accounts yet?

Hi DF, regarding the rumoured new PS portable, would PS5 be able to support 'lag-free' tech like the 60GHz mm-Wave to essentially release a Wii-U pad for the console? Based on the rumours that the new portable would be remote play focused, one would think the Wii-U approach would make the most sense. Would love to know your thoughts!

With the recently announced (but inevitable) departure of Phil Harrison from Google, does the DF team have a verdict on his checkered career? Most internet comments cannot believe he keeps getting hired, but wasn't he also part of Sony's PS1 and PS2 successes and surely can't be wholly blamed for the PS3 launch fiasco? Wonder if you think Harrison is more sinned against than sinning, thanks!

I set up an older Yamaha receiver with thrift store speakers to create a surround sound setup, and it's surprising the difference in quality between games in sound mixing. Borderlands 3 is great on Xbox, The Outer Worlds barely uses it. Any recommendations for games that take advantage of surround sound? And after some googling is it true that I'd need a dedicated sound card to get 5.1 out of my PC?

According to you, how high are the odds we might be facing a new soon-to-be-abandoned Sony's hardware with PSVR2?

Did you see that Sony mentioned you guys in their ongoing battle with Microsoft over the Activision Blizzard purchase?

Question for Eagle eye Alex : For all the pixel counting and frametime evaluations, how can you miss the most obvious thing in PC first-person games ? No self shadows ? It's the first thing I look for, and sadly it is missing in almost every game... Totally immersive breaking imho. What is your opinion on this ?

Has anyone had the chance or inclination to do much A/B testing of Sony's 3d audio against comparable solutions and stereo (for headphones, specifically)? Due to the way that the PS5 requires you to navigate several menus in order to turn on/off the effect I've found it very difficult to satisfactorily compare it to stereo (much like Alex's pet peeve with graphics settings). I'd love to see a comparison video which presents the differences in a way which is easy to hear yourself. As with most audio related coverage, it's hard to find objective analysis of the topic - most coverage relates to the Pulse headset, which betrays a fundamental lack of understanding of the core technology. As a one time audio-engineering student I'd do it myself, but I don't have the hardware required to capture either the HDMI or Dualsense output. Cheers!

Recently, Bubsy creator Mike Berlyn passed away. Being a longtime fan of DF Retro, this was particularly sad to hear. I know that we’ve often poked fun at Bubsy, but over the years the series has earned a special place in my heart thanks to DF. I don’t have any question this week, I simply wanted to honor the man who’s given us so many good times, laughs, and fond memories. 💙

if its not too late: the re 4 remake patch dropped last night for xbox. and, how to say this? they really messed up the IQ on series x. the game now looks worse than the ps5 demo. it also affects the resolution mode. but hey, deadzone issue is fixed....

What is your favorite shooter, and I mean real shooter a la R Type and Dodonpachi? Thanks, love the channel tons!

Jim Ryan said Sony Playstation would never recover from a downgraded Call of Duty, do you agree? Personally I think it's a good excuse to demand a full and comprehensive remaster of Killzone 2 with 120hz, RT, and multipayer.

Could you do something like the Spider-Man video where you showed only generated frames that would give an idea what DLSS 3 with 2 or 3 generated frames would look like? Would this have any practical problems?

will graphics api's like SDL2/3 ever integrate tensor core access like cuda/cdnn to allow for things like resource intensive npc ai for daily routines and such?
