One show closer to the big 100! We're putting the call for questions out a day earlier because... we're not entirely sure when we'll be recording DF Direct Weekly #96. We'll be watching Microsoft's Developer_underscore_Direct tonight but we're not yet sure whether we'll be doing a DF (no underscore) Direct specific to the Xbox extravaganza, or whether we'll roll it all into the actual DF Direct Weekly.

The way we're looking at things at the moment, it's likely we'll do the latter - but to tell you the truth, it could go either way. Regardless, whether we do one show or two, we're going to need your questions so get them in below. Questions specific to Developer_underscore_Direct would obviously be welcome, assuming you've seen it later today!

Feel free to suggest other topics too, of course. Chances are it'll be Rich, John and Alex at the mics this week.

Have you considered running a developer survey? Something I thought of after your recent call for Dev feedback. Related, have you gotten more feedback after the mass layoffs/stadia switchoff lately?

With AI and machine learning tools becoming viable tools in various fields, how and when will it be used in video games to create more believable window dressing & background content? Microsoft announced a big investment in the openAI company (people behind the language model chatGPT) and I see an obvious use case with it to create an essentially infinite amount of npc banter that could be combined with something like metahuman to effectively populate entire towns and cities with people that can offer more than simple one line text responses. What other applications of AI tools are there and where do you see this tech evolving in the next few iterations? And when will advancements in the field of AI in general be actually applied to creating better AI agents in game (enemies that can effectively and believably do things in games like fear 2006 but the new generation)?

What are your thoughts on the theory that the recent PC titles that are demanding more than 16gb of RAM are doing so to compensate for the fact that PCIE Gen 4 SSDs, as present on the PS5, are rare in most PCs today and a work around is needed to stream the data?

I got my hands on a Steam Deck (!), and am very impressed with what you get for a $400 computer. Aperture Deck Job is a very good expense shows what it possible on the hardware when software is purpose built for it, even if it is a very controlled experience. The nature of the deck though means that no one will likely develop specifically for it, which I feel is a shame. But if it gains that kind of attention from studios, who do think could do the most with the hardware, and who do you want to get dirty with it?

Did any of your have a chance to test PSVR2? Will there be PSVR2 coverage (hardware, games) on DF?

What's the deal with the console with the least powerful GPU using the vendor that produces the most powerful GPUs and the consoles with the most powerful GPUs using the vendor that produces the least powerful GPUs? Also do you think it's likely we'll see an Intel powered console in the future or are the existing relationships with GPU vendors pretty entrenched at this point?

Forspoken on Steam Deck has an oddity where it must have Steam running with the -steamdeck flag in order to launch under Proton. This has the side effect of causing it to not work under Proton when running on other Linux systems out of the box. Is this actually a scandal, or do you expect it to become common for otherwise standard Windows titles to have hardware specific code paths when running under Proton? Is "Deck Verified" the new "Nintendo Seal of Quality?"

Anonymous

I don't think Deck Verified is that reliable or informative anyway, personally. Valheim is Deck Verified but is unplayable in my opinion.

Hey DF crew! What does the team make of the wave of cancellations of live service games lately, most recently several coming from Square Enix. Has the live service bubble burst, or is this more a reflection of the terminated titles being poor games to begin with?

Do you ever feel like having a job that involves doing deep technical dives on games ever negatively affects your normal enjoyment of them? For instance do you ever find yourself playing a game, and then getting distracted by analyzing some light bounce or texture? If so, what do you do to try to separate working game time from leisure game time?

Hey DF. I have a question about fps and how it works with human eyes! I feel like this has been answered a million times, but I still don’t understand how a movie at 24fps looks very natural and smooth, but a game at same rate looks very choppy and unnatural. Even full CG movies look very good in a cinema or any TV and people actually turn off any motion smoothing to force the lower frame rate. so why can’t games simulate the effect such that motions look smooth?

Hey DF, Shader compilation stutter has been one of the biggest problems for PC gaming in 2022 and I’m grateful that Alex and the rest of Digital Foundry have continued to raise the issue. Hopefully we will be able to stop talking about it sometime in 2023. My question on this topic is about why it’s an issue at all. I understand that the problem comes from the PC not being a fixed platform, but games being deterministic programs; why are there differences in the result of shader compilation in the first place?

Based on what was shared in the Dev Direct, we got a nice taste at some of the graphical features coming to Forza Motorsport on Xbox Series X, but how many of those features do you think will carry over to the Series S? Is the smaller Xbox up to the task of RTGI and RT reflections on track? What do you think is going to be cut from the Series S version? Since this title is designed from the ground up for current gen, can we expect greater optimization on Series S hardware than we would have seen in previous Forza titles now that the S has become the new baseline platform for Xbox titles?

When Windows 10 came out, I kept my machines on Windows 7 and 8.1 for a year before upgrading. With Windows 11 approaching a year and a half old, is it time for the general PC gaming public to upgrade? (My current systems are on Coffee and Rocket Lake with Turing mobile and Ampere desktop GPUs, respectively)

Since John was considering getting a new TV this year, what do you think about the latest news regarding the MediaTek Pentonic 1000 SoC? Looks like it'll only support 2x HDMI 2.1 ports which is disappointing for those who skipped the Sony 2022 TVs hoping for them to finally catch up in 2023.

The phrase "well-optimized" or "poorly-optimized" gets thrown around for a lot of games when discussing reasons for their performance. On a general level, what do developers do to optimize their games? Is it looking at poly count on models and reducing those? Removing extraneous lights? What all is involved and what generally makes the biggest difference that makes a game well or poorly optimized?

How powerful and power-efficient could the mooted new Nintendo Switch or indeed any dedicated handheld device be if they were allowed to use Apple Silicon? M1 and M2 iPads already run fairly demanding games like Genshin Impact well on mobile form factor, while the AS-port of RE8 has impressed everyone with their performance on even base-level M1 and M2. So what level of graphical fidelity could we expect on an M2-powered Switch? (Or even a Pippin Vita - hey one can dream...)

24fps movies don’t really look smooth right? For example a panning shot. I do think the camera in games moves such that the flawed nature of 24fps would be very apparent. The camera in games moves faster and over larger distances, i think.

Rich

Motion blur. Films that deliberately suppress the natural motion blur of recording on camera look just as choppy as videogames at 24fps, its the blur between frames that gives the impression of smooth motion. Real proper motion blur could be done in games (and is done in offline rendering), but would take more processing power. Ray tracing could help with this, and RTX3K chips have special motion blur acceleration, but so far that has not been done in a real game to date.

Why GPUs these days are so thick and bulky? Is it really a necessity or just trying to appeal to a certain "bigger means better" audience? Thank you for all the outstanding work and your love of tech! =)

Did you guys see the PS5 pro rumors around the web? Apparently is supposed to release in April 2023. I don’t see how this would be possible for under 700 dollars, and I don’t think it would have market demand at such I high price

Hello DF, I have a question, particularly for Alex. So to play devil's advocate about AMD GPU's, I have a question regarding the RT capabilities. If the 7900 series cards are as good as up to 3090 Ti in overall RT performance, doesn't that mean the only Nvidia cards that are actually better in RT would be the 4080 and 4090, and that it would be on par with the 4070 Ti? Of course it's AMD's highest-end offering compared to Nvidia's 3rd best. But to be considered dire, I find that an exaggeration. All of the equal or better choices for RT do cost around the same or more. That said, I do believe they should have called them the 7800 series to make it seem more competitive overall. Last gen AMD did at least have comelling raster to Nvidia per level 3060 > 6600, 3090 > 6900, but that isn't the case this gen. Any thoughts on either?

Surely this question was asked a thousand times on reddit and co, but here i ask again because i am totally confused with all the different suggestions i found on the internet. How to i use my G-Sync monitor best in combination with V-Sync? G-Sync on + V-Sync off + FPS Limiter (e.g. with Riva Tuner Statistics) or G-Sync on + V-Sync on in Control Panel + V-Sync off in game again or something else completely?

Good morning DF Crew! Question for Alex about shaders: Is there anything that Steam, the Windows Store or the Epic Games Store could do to pre-compile shaders for the top hardware according to something like Windows telemetry or the Steam hardware survey? You mentioned that shader caches might not be "shareable" between one PC and another due to one PC potentially running a different version of Windows, would that be a problem? I would think that Valve in particular have the resources to make this possible. Thanks for all the work you guys do.

digitalfoundry

Set v-sync on in the Nvidia control panel, make sure G-Sync is active then sit back and enjoy your games!
