Hi everyone - we're looking to improve the Patreon experience at http://www.digitalfoundry.net - targeting new features and perhaps an exclusive or two for our supporters early next year. One of these features is support for HEVC, the 'next-gen' compression system utilised on 4K Blu-rays.

Compression is  improved approximately 2x over the h.264 we use at the moment, so in theory, your downloads will be much quicker as file-sizes are much smaller. We're still working on finalising an encoding profile, but HEVC support should also mean much better compatibility when running our videos from USB sticks on 4K TVs. However, for those running our content on PC or Mac, be advised that you will almost certainly require a hardware decoder and you'll need to set-up your media player correctly. Our existing h.264 encodes will be a lot larger, but will play back on more PC hardware.

As an initial test, today's new upload - a live PS4 Pro vs Pro Knack comparison - is offered for you to check out in both formats: https://www.digitalfoundry.net/2016-12-17-knack-ps4-pro-vs-ps4-live-graphics-comparison

Assuming we're happy with the quality level and compatibility, we hope to offer HEVC support for all content starting in early 2017.

Yeah nice, as always a pioneer! I like the quality of the game footage, but now you have to upgrade your camera. :D The mix between 1080p DSLR footage and 4k gaming is kinda strange and ugly. You need something like a black magic cinema. Its affordable and good.

As an owner of a BMD camera, who's worked with the BMPCC all the way up to the Ursa 4.6k, I can say they definitely shouldn't. As much as it would be visually appealing to see correct skintones and a decent dynamic range in a good resolution, BMD cameras require post production and that would slow down their process of making videos. With so much going on, they really don't need to do that. A Canon camera would have small, usable files and pretty nice skintones so i guess that's a decent compromise. I share the underlying sentiment though. The obvious solution is to hire me to do camera ops and post production.

HEVC codec is always welcome, but what about the audio codec and the container? maybe upgrade to FLAC? and use mkv container instead of mp4? ..I personally like those open source variations

I would like this for normal game coverage (gameplay videos) but I don't think i NEED to hear the exact qualities of Richard's and the other guys voices. I'd still really be down for it, and appreciate it though. I wish YT would let us upload in lossless codecs.

Kinda stinks I pledged and didn't get one video to work on my tv and got nothing out of it. Would be great if you guys could give someone like me a month free since I commented about it not working during which I had pledg'ed and obviously the content is about the same since then. Just saying.

I wouldn't mind continuing moving forward I only stopped since it didnt work prior to the addition of HEVC. Just feel like I wasted a month.
