Whelp, it's that time again! The usual DF Direct Weekly docket planning begins today!

With Richard and Audi out of the office this week, it's time for Oliver to make his DF Direct debut!

We're still figuring out the topics for this episode but, in the meantime, let's see those questions!

When doing comparisons involving PC and console, for example Alex's excellent Chernobylite video, why do you almost always compare against PS5 & not Xbox?

With all this talk about Unreal Engine 5, what’s what’s new with CryEngine.

Hi DF, first time long time. When the 40 hz refresh rate option hit my Steam Deck, it table-flipped my understanding of what a good framerate is; I used to think 30 fps was garbage, and 60 fps is where playability began, but I now understand that it actually starts at 40, with great quality jumps at 45 and 50, as long as the frame pacing is consistent. The thing is, it made me retroactively upset that the industry locked onto 30 fps as the "graphics preset" standard, to the point where the PS4 doesn't support 40 hz output, even though we've pretty much all been gaming on displays that would support arbitrary refresh rates for at least the last 10 years. Given the unique intersection of performance, responsiveness, and smoothness of 40 Hz gameplay, and the effectiveness of 40 fps mode in the 3(?) Insomniac titles that currently support it, do you think a 40 Hz renaissance is on the horizon, where we get to have our RT cake and eat it, too? I never thought I'd get to play heavy games from last gen like RDR 2 on the go, but 40 Hz mode on the Deck makes it more than feasible, even with the extra lag compared to 60 Hz (which I don't notice).

DF team: What specific developer responses to your respective videos have you been most excited or proud to get, and why? This can fall under them appreciating your content and feedback, your coverage leading to a problem you really cared about being resolved, you just being a big fan of the person/developer, or whatever else comes most to mind.

Hey DF crew! How effective has Embracer Group been with all of the IP and studios they have acquired since their inception. I know we more commonly hear them referred to as "THQ Nordic" and not their parent name, but they're difficult to keep up with since they own so many studios. Will they continue to focus on Tomb Raider given what you know about them? Keep rockin' guys. I appreciate all the hard work you do.

Theoretically couldn’t 60hz displays do low frame rate compensation for 30 fps capped games by doubling the frames? Obviously this would still look like a 30 fps game, but we could get the input latency of 60 fps, as well as making any drops below 30 potentially not look quite as bad. For example; with a game like Bloodborne (not that Sony’s likely to give us back compat vrr features), could a 60 hz display running doubled frames solve games like that?

Kind of a part 2, to my other question but you can pick those one alone too… just want to verify since I don’t have any way to check this other than by eye… with a 60 hz display, do insomniac’s updates provide any new features at all other than preventing any possible screen tearing even more than before? The fidelity mode still looks like 30 fps to me, but I’ve never seen 40. I’m intrigued by their in house LFC solution but I don’t think LFC could work on 60hz display above 30 fps based on my understanding of it

Non-VRR displays typically have a few preset arbitrary refresh rates, usually 60 for the americas and 50 for I think older European content (I think they’re all the same standard 60 now) and then 24 for movies. 40 hz would be a weird refresh rate that hasn’t really had a use case before, so tv manufacturers wouldn’t preprogram it in like they do with the others. It could possibly be enabled with a firmware update like it was on steam deck, but based on Alex’s reaction to it in the last direct I’m pretty sure this is the first time anything like that has ever been done. Valve may have had that feature planned before shipping and kept it as a surprise

I have a GSync display. I NEVER use it for VRR. Here are my reasons! 1. I love frame pacing consistency. I notice on VRR when the FR is swinging. I noticed that as long as the FPS is consistent, my tolerance for low FPS is actually decent--around 45, and I can ignore it fairly quickly. 2. I hate a loud computer. Why am I pushing it to run the upper bounds when the returns are so few? Plus, it's bad for the environment, hahahahhaah. 3. I like the bells a whistles. Running at high rates with the world looking like pastel cardboard doesn't jive with my aesthetics.. sooooo... I use GSync to lock to arbitrary refreshes that offer both a reasonably high rate AND still loo pretty. I've played games at 40, 55, 75, 85, 100, and finally 160fps (Redout at high FR is butter for the eyes). What surprised me was how smooth 40 was within seconds. Our brains do weird and fantastical things. 30fps is still annoying though. Meh.

Hi DF, I know that you guys are against acquisitions and the consolidation of the industry. But is there any company that you guys personally think will benefit from an acquisition?

DarkRod99

What do you guys think will show up in the XBOX/Bethesda Showcase. Any game that you guys are interested in seeing gameplay of?

DarkRod99

Do you think Starfield will push XBOX Series hardware to its limits? Seeing that is a Series S/X, PC exclusive. What rendering techniques would you expect/hope from the title that wasn't in the last-gen Bethesda games

Hey DF, what are your thoughts on LTTs coverage of the GDM-FW900/CRTs in general (they posted a video on it yesterday).

Eric Benoit

I'm not requesting a video but I'm really enjoying Trek To Yomi. Has that game peaked anyone's interest in the DF Crew?
