Well hello there! We're currently putting together the docket for DF Direct Weekly #59 and it's that time again, the time where we ask you to pitch in with your questions.

Once again, news topics are thin on the ground though we have heard talk of Breath of the Wild 3 being TOO BIG for Switch Pro. That is a 'joke' but what isn't is discussion about PlayStation 5 VRR and possibly the mooted PlayStation 'Preservation Team'.

Any other news stories we should be talking about?

Beyond that, let's be having you with your questions!

Hey DF team, i suspect that this question for Rich but its open to all applicable, would you guys be happy to have the information from your work ported to the console mods wiki page and your work sited as a reference if/once an appropriate page opens to insert said information?

Alex, when doing PC optimizations for your videos you usually have two to three graphics cards represented. What's the behind-the-scene setup? Multiple PCs, test bench, or or just good-old-fashioned swapping GPUs in your personal machine? Bonus - have you hooked up your steam deck to an external GPU, and why not?

This may be after the buzzer, but it looks like Sony has created a game preservation team! Sounds great, and a possible turn after their attempt to shut down some digital store fronts. What do you think about it?

(tired) Gaming Dad

As someone who suffers from Simulator Sickness I am starting to look towards my next PC upgrade and with it an upgrade on my main display. Mostly First-Person games and/or games with a lot of motion blur/quick movement. Outdoor environments make it worse for me than an indoor (closed in) area for some games (ie Bioshock Infinite). I can play Doom (2016) for a bit before I start to get sick, and then with Outriders I can play just fine all the day long provided to slow down the turning speed to it's lowest setting and disable motion-blur. For this reason I have stuck to isometric games a lot lately, but have a vast collection of games I can't play now :( I can barely even watch my son play Minecraft or a friend play Stanley Parable, while just seeing a VOD of Warframe is enough to make me close and go lay down in. I went from a 1080p TN 60hz to a Ge-Sync 1440p IPS at 144hz and that helped some and at the same time I jumped to my GTX 1070 to keep going. As I am now finding I can enjoy some of these more graphically heavy games, like Outriders, I am noticing the frame dips and in turn I am turning some settings down to keep a smooth FPS (80+ usually). I am starting to think about a new computer (eyes on AM5, ATX12 v3.0 PSU's, and of course next-gen PCIe 5.0 video cards) and am wondering what screen I should look at buying and then what kind of hardware (cpu/gpu) I should look at to pair with said screen? I sit about 3-4ft away from my screen usually, sometimes 6-7 if I lean back with a controller in my hand. My current screen is a 27" ViewSonic (1440p, 144hz/165hz OC, IPS panel). Rumor has it a CRT would pretty much "cure" my problem... Thanks guys!

Now that Sony snuck (potentially broken) VRR into the PS5 settings via very sophisticated (possibly ai controlled via hidden GPUFPGAsoc?!!?) date based unlocking of the setting with the early April system update (that also broke BFI due to always on ALLM) I noticed that there is wording about needing a games support and there's also a setting to force it in unsupported games and was curious as to why a game would be incompatible with VRR for the PS5? I didn't think games needed explicit support for VRR. I understand (or thought I understood) why older PC games don't always work with it but I didn't think official support was required or would be required in any modern game or engine. Don't get me wrong, Im glad it's here but... Well I am upset (thanks John) that they broke BFI by forcing ALLM to be always on and having no user facing setting. It can be disabled with tricks but the trade-off isn't worth it. Hopefully Sony fixes this soon. Also hope we see updates to allow more games to run unlocked. A new performance profile as it were, one that could be hidden if the system doesn't detect VRR.

This was probably one of the first things you tested but I wanted to make sure the question was asked: Does VRR "fix" Elden Ring on PS5 like on Series X?

What is your fav brand of oat milk John?

If there's still time before you record, can y'all check out the Balan Wonderworld drama that just dropped this morning? tl;dr Yuji Naka was kicked out of the project 6 months before launch and claims Square Enix and the developer knew the game was going to launch unfinished. https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1519656479657242624

If you haven't filmed yet: The Coalition announced yesterday that they removed the Gears 5 Map Builder via a Technical Update (which has been pushed already) with no real prior announcement to "focus on future projects". The game is just short of 2.5 years old. See: https://twitter.com/GearsofWar/status/1518999780390748160 What do you guys at DF think about removing a whole map builder like this so short after release, even if it might not have been used that much?

After reading the post description, I see you are already aware and talking about it. I have shamed my family.

Could we get a revisit of DMC5:SE's 120fps mode on PS5 with the new VRR update, and maybe a quick comparison against XSX? The game is on sale for Golden Week at $20 on each console's respective marketplace, and I'm considering picking it up. Since this version of the game isn't coming to PC and now that both console versions have feature parity, I'd love to know which offers the more consistent experience as of April 2022.

André Scheffler

So Sony has sneaked the VRR feature in with a previous update just to enable it now for everyone - thoughts? I noticed it does not work on every PS5 game, even if you enable it for unsupported games,

Is there any interest in doing a retro-focused Steam Deck video on the oldest PC games that will run on the device? Half-Life, Deus Ex, Quake, Sacrifice? Do any of them run? Are any of them tolerable with the Deck's controller config?
