Yes indeed the week has started, and a week has ended, and a week is still to come, it is DF Direct Weekly and we of course need your awesome questions. We answered a record amount of questions during our last broadcast, so methinks we need to get on that proper DF Direct Mailbag patreon video. But until the postman delivers that bag to us, let us know your questions for this week below in the comments!

How likely is from software to deliver a stable 60 fps in Elden Ring on current gen consoles? Should we wait a month or two in the hopes of such an improvement or just get the PS4 version (or a new TV with VRR for the XBOX version)?

Anonymous

Considering Square Enix lately been announcing a lot of pixel remasters , is there a game or games you would like to see being remastered? Thank you guys for the amazing videos, i hope you guys read my question , if not, you guys sux (just kidding)

The current power/size trend in the PC/Console space is concerning. Will we see rethink similar to the mobile/M1 movement? PC = Veyron vs. M1 = Plaid

Hello DF, Elden Ring was lambasted by a couple of developers for essentially being what it is (though criticisms of performance of course are valid). Does the team think this is a vocal minority, or a few developers voicing what the ‘industry’ largely thinks (i.e. that the prevalent handholding and quest check-listing being the gold-standard for open-world game design).

Hello DF! Mark Cerny shared a new "ray tracing unit" patent filed by Sony. What are your thoughts on this type of device and its implications on console hardware becoming similar to the PC space? Will the settings start offering users more options than resolution and performance modes based on which SKU of hardware upgrade you own?How likely is it that this is Sony's plan in lieu of a PS5 pro? Is this generally worse for developers or are there any upsides to this becoming a reality?

First of all; thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us on a daily-ish basis, guys! You guys are one of the reasons I went from teaching to game development. Now, to the question! Seeing Covid slowly becoming just a bad memory, would you guys consider doing a live podcast sometime in the (hopefully safe) future? Maybe you could do one in Norway since that's Audi's hub space? Maybe Alex could warm up the crowd with some metal shreddin'? Keep up the great work!

Greets from Munich, keep up the good work. I have a question for Alex regarding OLED-Panels. Why is it so hard to produce OLED-Screens for the PC market? There are technical solutions for one of the biggest issues: the burn-in problem (samsung had the solution to move pixels back and forth on his windows 10 samsung tab). There are many television manufacturer who also could produce pc monitors but they dont do it? Why? This or next year some oled panels (equal/greater than 32inch) will be produced, but not for the mainstream market (27inch, >60hz, 1440p).

In light of the ongoing crisis, are there any upcoming games from either of the two countries that you were looking forward to that you feel will be adversely affected?

Due to the Switch 2, Super Switch or whatever name Nintendo choose for their next console having an Nvidia GPU allowing for DLSS on the system, do you think it will be capable of matching or even surpassing the visual presentation of the new Sony and Microsoft machines, as AMD's FidelityFX system is not matching DLSS in its visual presentation, does Nintendo have an ace up their sleeve here.

How close are the two horizons to nanite/ue5 in terms of geometric density/complexity? Are we still seing a generational leap with nanite?

When there are performance issues like in Elden Ring, will I benefit if I use only 1080 screen, basically standard HD tv? Will I get better performance if I don't utilize high resolution?

The Dressing Gown

Rumor has it if you say Bubsy 3 times that Audi will appear, every time I get to 2 I chicken out. Could you test this to confirm? 🤣

@John. On DF Direct Weekly #29 (54:03), you mentioned the Dolby Atmos latency issue on Xbox Series X effecting everyone. Any updates?

Anonymous

With some games having issues sticking to 60fps, why can't some console games switch the output to 50hz so that it can run at a fluid 50fps? They can do it for 120hz why not 50?

Anonymous

You've done a handful of sponsored videos now and I'm curious; how do they come about? Does DF want to do a game but doesn't think it'll have enough clicks to justify itself so you reach out to the publisher to see if they're interested, does the publisher approach you, or is there a mixture? Once the decision is made, how do the logistics work as far as content goes--do you need to run the video by them before they agree they want to post it or anything along those lines?

Anonymous

You've previously explained that devs have said to you that the Switch's improper frame-pacing, especially at 30fps, is inherent in the hardware. (See Crysis 2 analysis.) Do you hold out much hope for this being addressed in the next Switch, whenever that may be? Nintendo's track record says no.

Guerilla Games released patch 1.07 for HZD. One of the changes included is changes to vegetation to improve image quality in the "Favor Performance mode", but they still request feedback about it. Some sources on the internet say that they can hardly see any change in the amount of shimmering (like you mentioned in your initial HZD-analysis). What are your thoughts on this aspect of the patch?

Anonymous

I often find armchair devs (me included) asking why developers don't "simply" lower the resolution of a console game with performance issues in a patch, especially when the performance mode of a game targets a higher resolution than is perhaps necessary (PS5/XSX Elden Ring performance mode targeting dynamic 4K and not 1440p, for example). Are you aware of any reasons why this isn't as straight forward as one might assume? Or are console manufacturers holding the 4K gun to developers' heads?

Anonymous

Hey guys! Hope you're all doing great? I'm not sure if you know it, but arstechnica.com has a great video series called 'war stories' where developers of legendary games talk about a specific problem they had to solve during the making of said game. I've often wondered what you guys would be able to achieve with a similar format - talking to devs about how they achieved certain graphical/gameplay/engine feats given the restrictions of the console/hardware they were programming for. Is this type of content something you would be interested in doing? I, for one, would love to see you interview devs on how they managed to get games to run on certain hardware.

Good morning from beautiful Southern Oregon. If you had a time machine and could smother one game or mechanic in the crib for all eternity what would it be and why?

Anonymous

I have a question for John. In the recent Gran Turismo video you mentioned how the game could benefit from using DSR or non-native resolution strategies to increase performance, especially with RT features. However with Forza Horizon 5, you personally opted for the native resolution to prioritize image clarity with the lower framerate cap. Could you expand on the scenarios when you think one rendering strategy benefits more over the other?

There is a divide in the gaming community on whether the politics of a company should be a factor in enjoying a game. Some say people should just enjoy the games themselves, others that the morals of the company behind the game matter. Outside of work evaluations, curious how the team views what they play in this perspective?

Anonymous

What would you prefer? Locked 60fps or 60-80fps VRR?

Dennis Martin Herbers

There was talk of GPU drivers (a topic close to my heart) in last week's DF weekly, and as I've mentioned in the DF Premium Discord, there are quite the differences on the AMD site when compared to Windows (Steam Deck using the RADV/Mesa OpenGL+Vulkan drivers instead of AMD's own vendor drivers used on Windows). I am positive those will be even more responsible for performance differences than Proton vs Windows. This however leads me to my question for each of you: are hydrangea (hortensia) or cherry blossoms prettier, and what is your reasoning?

Why does game after game target too high resolutions on the Xbox Series X, leading to unstable frame rates, compared to PS5 versions with lower resolutions and better framerates? Elden Ring and Assetto Corsa are the two latest examples that comes to mind, but there are plenty of others too. Is Xbox getting hurt by their own marketing BS in the previous generation, where they claimed the One X were the only "True 4k console" (while the PS4 Pro was using checkerboarding) - leading developers to push the resolution too high on the Series X? Why does Xbox target resolutions it can't archive?

Anonymous

Given that the processing power of desktop gaming PCs is getting more and more ahead of consoles, with increasing visual fidelity aspirations of devs, do you guys think that in 3~4 years time the expectation for games to have a 60fps mode on consoles will be still sound or is it back to square 'cinematic 30fps'?

Anonymous

Several DF Directs ago there was talk of how 30FPS gaming could feel worse on OLED screens. With 30FPS gaming potentially making a comeback (via Unreal Engine 5 or otherwise), would you suggest that folks who do not have an OLED TV/monitor for gaming hold off or look into buying something non-OLED?

Anonymous

The PowerSlave Exhumed CRT filter has gotten a lot of positive feedback; is this something that could in theory be turned into a standalone application so it could be used across a range of games? Or does each game and engine need its own custom implementation due to how the rendering of a CRT filter is achieved?

Hi DF, With the release of VRR on Sony's previous flagship TV,s and it being at launch on this year's models, surely its imminent on ps5 now? Or do you think its taking longer there due to any possible issues with the compatibility layer/ backwards compatibility for it on ps4 or maybe they only have it compatible with their own tvs in house and not any VRR enabled screen for the ps5.

Anonymous

Do you think the "burn-in crisis" is overblown? Burn-in has been around for a long time, CRT, Plasma displays, and phone screens come to mind, but many people are still using those panels today. Especially in light of Wulff Den's 5-month torture test on the OLED Switch plus general improvements to current OLED technology, do you think consumer anxiety over purchasing new OLED panels is misplaced?

Anonymous

The M1 Ultra is mighty impressive. I'm curious if there's any thoughts you at DF have as Apple scales its performance higher & higher. They even teased more to come

Anonymous

Hi DF! Anecdotally, it seems like the PS5 generally speaking has a frame rate advantage over XSX, even when target resolutions are the same (correct me if this is wrong). Do you think this is a result of devs getting familiar with the XDK, and this will change over time? Or is this something you expect to persist through the generation?

Fabian Kaiser

Hey Team, long time viewer, first time Human with a Question! I recently acquired an LG g1 for work and gaming but my work laptop max supports 4k 30 on hdmi out. Probably Hdmi 1.4 or sth. With its usb c thunderbolt 3 40 gb/s port and an adapter, I am getting 4k 60. Now the question: is there anyway I can get a 4k 120 with a thunderbolt 4 adapter or other workaround? 40 gb/s should be enough right?

Hi guys, love the content! I was wondering why have game developers recently been disabling animation interpolation on distant characters. Good examples of this can be seen in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Resident Evil 2 remake. It also seems prevalent in Elden Ring on last-gen consoles. I assume this is for saving on CPU calculations, but why is it never an option to disable this graphical feature? Whenever I see animation interpolation disabled, I find it quite jarring.

Why do you feel that DX12 games are so bad with shader compilation and do not universally provide a shader cache setting so that shuddering does not occur? Looking at HZD on PC, it was patched with a shader cache in its latest update, so it is very possible.

With Lovelace GPUs looking to be targeting a 500-600W TDP what do you think the cooling solution will look like? Nvidia really stepped it up with the 3000 series, but almost doubling the TDP is significant to say the least
