More bonus material from the Steam Deck review! Initially there was going to be a section where after the benchmarks, I'd talk about gaming on the Deck in-depth, similar to the RTX 3050 review. However, with deadlines approaching and with an already dense piece on the timeline, I decided to move that content into a separate video, but made sure to use a fair amount of b-roll from those capture sessions as cutaways in the review and to put gameplay front and centre in the intro.

Forza Horizon 5 working properly was one of those genuine 'wow' moments so I'm happy to share highlights of the capture session with you, along with Deck benchmarks capped to 30fps and unlocked.

I think what's most impressive here is the density and the fact that at this resolution, pop-in doesn't seem to be as much of an issue. Resolution may be lower, but I'm fairly sure we are operating in excess of the Xbox One S version, which is fascinating. I did try the full Series performance mode settings set-up, but there were more dropped frames than I was comfortable with.

Also interesting to note that the 'long' motion blur shutter setting (as used on Series consoles in their 30fps modes - one of the key reasons it works so well) is deployed here on Deck and it helps to hide some of the single frame drops you encounter.

There are some audio issues here which I suspect may be my cheapo USB-C hub, I didn't really notice anything untoward during handheld play.

Its great to hear that Forza 5 runs so well considering as of a couple of days ago it wasn't a supported title for the Steam Deck.

Proton has come a long way. It’s core part is Wine, which seems to have finally found its calling as a games compatibility layer.
