Greetings earthlings! Yes we are sending signals towards your civilizations because we need questions to answer during our DF Direct Weekly broadcast. This week, Audi, Alex and John will be on hand to talk a bit about Street Fighter 6, Unreal Engine, Bethesda launcher and everything in between.

A note on questions, Rich is hard at work with his Steam Deck review which is why he is sitting this week out. As next week will be Steam Deck heavy, hold onto your questions about the unit till then as Rich will be able to answer most of them by then!

Know you guys are super busy, but any plans to cover GRID Legends? Looks like a solid progression from 2019s GRID, and has a 120fps mode.

bigboss69

You have got me lusting for a CRT to play retro pc games. If you could be part of the development process of designing a new CRT display what modern day features would you want to see on it and why? Love your work <3

The PowerSlave Exhumed CRT filter has gotten a lot of positive feedback; is this something that could in theory be turned into a standalone application so it could be used across a range of games? Or does each game and engine need its own custom implementation due to how the rendering of a CRT filter is achieved?

Keep up the amazing work and the increasing output. Love your analytical and serious approach without being unempathetic. Weird question: does your mechanistic understanding of how video games and graphics work get in the way of experiencing the games you play? It sometimes seems like the more you know the more difficult it gets to get lost in the video game magic.

Back in the day, fighting games were a showcase for the latest technology in gaming. Virtua Fighters, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Dead or Alive, etc. Do you think the genre can still impress in the age of ray traced gaming? Is it possible that we will be blown away with SF6 graphics or should we expect a slightly improved SF5 presentation with an updated roaster?

The Series S has required significant compomises and/or had inconsistent performance issues in, as Oliver put it in his CrossfireX video, "an uncomfortable number of recent titles" during this cross gen period, and I'm starting to have real concerns about the system's long term viability and its impact on the generation as a whole. It kind of holds up now, but there are inevitably going to be games that really want to push fidelity and target 30fps. Given that some games already are seeing 60fps modes only on the X and not the S, what does this mean for future 30fps titles? 15fps? It seems like it's going to become more and more of a problem for devs as the generation continues and I feel like it's either going to result in Series games having to be less ambitious or some devs skipping Xbox consoles entirely because the lowest common denominator is mandatory, technologically challenged and too difficult to work with. What compromises can actually be made to ensure this system is still viable and not holding everything else back over the next few years?

Were you suprised by the strong negative backlash from console gamers regarding the image quality in horizon forbidden west? I found it quite unexpected considering that pc gamers and pc gaming tech reviewers at least often express that they prefer sharpness over more soft TAA presentations. Are console gamers and pc gamers really different in this regard?

My ATI Radeon 9800 died while trying to run the Crysis demo. It did! On low only. For about ten minutes before a very sad "chirp" sound and a garbled screen appeared. The card served me well through college, playing some of my favorite PC games along the way. Do you have any go-to stories about hardware going out in a blaze of glory?

Hi team DF! I know John in particular is a huge fan of arcade racers and I've really enjoyed the DF retro videos on the topic, the Ridge Racer DF Retro in particular was exquisite. I have great memories playing the Screamer series on PC, particularly 1, 2 and Rally and would love to know your thoughts on them. I'm not sure if my love of them is purely nostalgia or if they really were as good as I remember. Thank you for all the great content.

I recently bought a used original PSP for £40 off eBay. I had never owned one before, but its power is impressive for its time. I think a DF Retro retrospective of it would be great to see, would you ever consider doing one?

Hello DF team, I had recently built a computer with an i9-10900k (a PCIE 3.0 CPU) and was looking to wait for a 40 series GPU to release to pair the two. I was initially worried new NVIDIA cards would begin to show performance loss on PCIE 3.0 motherboards, but it seems at least with the 40 series, as far as anyone knows, there's not too much to worry about yet. When do you think PCIE 4.0 will show large GPU performance gains over 3.0? I know the recent AMD card (6500XT I think) did, but that was due to memory and lane limits.

Thanks for the answer to my last question. Have you seen Microsoft's VRS presentation and what do you think about it? https://youtu.be/Sswuj7BFjGo

With the speed and cost of NVME drives lately will we ever see a graphics card with a expandable memory? Sort of like how the PS5's SSD is wired for max throughput.

Playing Forza Horizon 5 I couldn't help but notice how tire smoke clips inside the cars. I know it's a minor thing in overall amazing game, but is there any way developers can solve it with modern techniques or is it inherent to the way sprite particles work? Could compute shaders solve it?

https://twitter.com/noodalls has measured the input lag for KoF XV and it seems to be extreme for PS5 and the Unreal Engine is said to be the problem. What's your thoughts about it? Is it playable according by the fight game gurus Audi and Tom?

Hi DF! Hardware related question. I just bought an ultrawide monitor (165 Hz, 4ms response time, etc.) which has been great for working with a MacBook, connected via Thunderbolt (USB-C connector). The monitor only has HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 ports, so I'm unable to get the full 3440x1440 resolution on an older windows gaming laptop (HDMI only laptop) or 1440P 120hz for consoles (ps5, xbox series). I found a "StarTech" brand HDMI to DisplayPort adapter, which supposedly is an "active" converter (it's USB powered) and should work okay. It's quite expensive at around $60 USD. I can currently use my Xbox Series via HDMI at 1080P@120hz but I'd love 1440P@120Hz. Have you had any experience regarding these adapters? Do they add noise, delay, etc? Thanks DF!

Hello Gentlemen, I'm playing Horizon Forbidden West right now after Pokemon Legend Arceus, both fantastic games! However, I'm having trouble with looking at Horizon's fidelity mode, especially environmentally dense area, but I have no such problem with Pokemon Legend Arceus. They are both 30 fps games. I try to turn down or even off motion blur in Horizon but that doesn't help in significant way. I wonder if I'm encountering some kind of uncanny valley that with the crazy fidelity of Horizon 2, 30fps is affecting my brain processing information on screen?

Hi there! Nintendo once again started the whole preservation debate. I always wondered why companies didn't switch their services or games to a peer-to-peer system right before shutting their servers down. Games and services would be less stable and slower, but they would still work forever. Why not do that?

Anonymous

Do any of you have any idea why AMD are dragging their feet on a DLSS equivalent? They have "tensor core"-ish equivalents in the new consoles, right (the silicon that is being used for RT)?

Anonymous

Hey DF Crew! Love the Horizon 2 content. Guerilla seems to have pushed next gen forward while also providing a competent last gen experience, much as Playground did with Forza. When we look back on this period, do you think "cross gen" will have been a net benefit, allowing games to be more successful with a wider audience, or will hardware bottlenecks have made this all more trouble than it's worth?

Anonymous

Fellas! Given the controversy surrounding Street Fighter 6's dubious-looking logo, I propose you a challenge; Are you able to come up with a better SF6 logo than Capcom themselves?

What do you guys think about the graphics between Elden Ring and Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake from 2020? Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki said that Demon's Souls put his team under extra pressure to improve Elden Ring's graphical fidelity. Do you feel like they succeeded in that aspect of the game?

As Alex seems to be an old fan of Command & Conquer franchise: Would you rather see a remaster/remake (like in the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection) of one of the older CnC games (like Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2 or Generals) or a whole new entry in the franchise? Do you think a new entry set in the Tiberian, Red Alert or Generals universe would be feasible in today's gaming market that seems to have moved away a bit from RTS-games?

Simplex

Any new scoops on PSVR2? :)

MittenFacedLass

Signed Distance Fields can be used to achieve some level of physics reaction for particles, with decent performance. There's not a huge number of devs using them that way yet though. PhysX used to be able to do some good physicalized particle effects, but mostly on PC, and it's mostly been abandoned sadly.

bigboss69

I had to use a usbc to hdmi 2.1 adapter to get 120hz 4k hdr on my lgc1 as my gpu at the time didnt have 2.1 but the usbc port was capable of outputting enough bandwidth, it would cut out and lose signal all the time, especially if the tv went into standby, the pc would need a full restart to find the signal again. Take note, I also lost the gsync capability when using the adapter.

When will we have Oliver's debut to DF Direct Weekly?

MittenFacedLass

It happening right after the backlash over Dying Light 2 having strong, soft TAA on vegetation seems particularly ironic, too. You go one way, people are mad. You go the other way, people are also mad.

A question for John, With the impending release of the first QD Oled gaming ultrawide monitor, and it being very modestly priced compared to what's on offer today in the monitor market, do you think we're finally heading into a golden period of Oled/properly HDR capable PC monitors at competitive prices? It seems that qd oled screens are cheaper to make and alot of failed large TV glass is getting cut into 34" ultrawides. Its very exciting to see a 34" ultrawide 175hz, qd oled with a gsync ultimate module even, priced at 1300 usd.

@Alex: a few episodes ago you said you've never held a Wii U. A few questions: what's it like not having a soul? Can you taste food? How do you look so good when you can't see your own reflection?

Anonymous

I'd guess that one of the hold-ups for this is that the component video out of the PSP is... peculiar, to say the least. It makes grabbing high quality, full frame video impossible without extra hardware.

Anonymous

Hello gentlemen! News reports are saying that Square Enix is once again prepping to deep freeze a promising IP because of sales. Any thoughts on how bleak the gaming landscape looks when quality is judged purely on sales?

Anonymous

Thinking back to John's Ninja Gaiden 2 video, were there any standout PS3 titles that required a similar redesign in order to run comparatively well on the Xbox 360? What about PS3 titles that did not get this treatment and subsequently ran poorly on the 360?

With the launch of Destiny 2 Witch Queen, Bungie has introduced windowed hdr mode. In the patch notes Bungie says: Windows 10 (and up): windowed fullscreen should provide the same (or better) performance compared to exclusive fullscreen. Under the hood, Destiny now uses DXGI flip model on Windows 10 (and up). More Information here- https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/dxgi-flip-model/ Is exclusive fullscreen not necessary anymore?

Any chance of seeing John's, Kyle Reese trench coat make an appearance on a DF Direct episode?

Anonymous

My dudes, do you think it's possible with the current generation technology that we will be able to maybe implement our own face to characters in maybe role playing games of sorts? Maybe even hear our own names outspoken in game? Is that even feasible? P. S Yeah, i am gonna need that Chili recepie Audi? 🌶️

It was reported in several news-outlets that Elden Ring will, like the whole Dark Souls serie, will have a 60 FPS limit on PC. This is then probably an engine limitation. What are your thoughts on this? Should FromSoftware fix this?

d0x360

Wonder if some other system is tied to that frame rate and if it goes above 60 it starts breaking things.

d0x360

Not a question but I was told to give the resolution mode in Horizon FW a chance, so I did... And I play at performance mode. I just couldn't do the 30 although I will say 30 in that game looks and plays better than 30 in most.

Anonymous

Maybe the original Havok physics implementation goes haywire above 60 fps? Don't know honestly where you're going with your HFW comment haha. I think it isn't related to this haha

d0x360

It was a comment for John, I know this is the call for questions. Did I reply to you with it? If I did I didn't mean to. The mobile site for Patreon isn't the best.

Moogall

With so many people having larger TVs in their homes would it make sense to have more wide screen modes on console? 2.35 or 2.39 etc… Could this save on rendering load while also giving a wider FOV and a more cinematic feel?

Anonymous

Yeah, I couldn’t play in Resolution mode either. I play on big enough (64”) 4k screen, and I still failed to see the appeal of Resolution mode.

Eric Benoit

Hey Richard, Fantastic job on the Steam Deck video. What do you like to do to decompress after a big project like that? And what do the other stars of DF do a well?

Anonymous

Does John use a standing desk? If so what model and how’s the wobble?

digitalfoundry

Haha, well... today I've set-up the Direct admin, quality reviewed Elden Ring PC and Gran Turismo 7 tech review content, written up Alex's Elden Ring script for Eurogamer and done the admin on the next Steam Deck bonus for Patreon supporters. Maybe I'll get tomorrow off!

Anonymous

Late but potentially for the next one: Now that Steam Deck is out and Sony and MS are releasing first party titles on Steam, is this Sony and Microsoft's way of saying "never again" to handhelds?

Anonymous

Hello DF! Keep up the great work. I was wondering if you've heard about the patent Mark Cerny filed for what looks to me like an "E-GPU" for the Play Station 5 to help with ray tracing and fps. I wanted to know your thoughts on this considering that the PS5 lacks DLSS. Will this mean no more choosing between performance and fidelity? P.S. I also game on an RTX 3090, so I'm not holding my breath regarding the ray tracing knowing how expensive it can be without DLSS.

Anonymous

I'm sorry guys but I'm going to have to disagree. I'm what you would call an FPS snob PC gamer. When choosing between fidelity and performance I usually go with the latter for that sweet 60fps almost every game. For this game, however, I have to agree with John. It looks really good at 30fps, more than any other game I can think of. I tried performance and the graphics downgrade was just too much, especially for the "look" HFW was going for with everything being so sharp. I think you just have to look at it as more "cinematic" instead of less smooth which helped me. The nail in the coffin for me though was the fact that it was a locked 30fps on fidelity and not a locked 60 fps on performance.

d0x360

Sorry just can't do it. They essentially look identical so the loss of 30 fps when there's no VRR just isn't worth it
