Patrons! The holidays are right around the corner, but we are squeezing out another DF Direct. Why don't you all fill up the sack with surprising questions?

Is 1080/30 a price worth paying for Matrix Awakens level visuals?

Anonymous

Hey DF! Any backlog games that you guys are planning to play/finish during the holidays? Also want to thank the DF team for an amazing year in content, it pulled me through some though times!

Hi ! Why don't you produce HDR content anymore ? And why don't you comment on the HDR implementation anymore ? Has it become good enough across the board that this is just a non-story now ? Thanks !

John, you've been preaching about using the BFI-mode on the LG CX and setting it up properly using ColorControl PC software. Do you have some sort of walkthrough at hand on how to set this up? I have a Retorting 5X hooked up to the TV and I'm a fan of using the awesome scan line filters on it, it dims the image sure but it's more than bright enough for me (mostly playing in a dark room) Enabling BFI + scan line filters does make the screen a tad duller though, and I was hoping some tweaking in the PC-software could help remedy this..but I need some guidance on how to proceed.

Are there any games from genres like strategy, management, simulation etc. that you would really like to try if you had more time for games outside of work? For example, they might be games that would take up a lot of time to play but may not be that interesting graphically so might be difficult to tie into DF's content.

Merry Christmas guys. Loved all of the exceptional content this year❤️ I'm lucky enough to own a PS5. Without economics as a factor, what monitor variety would you suggest? Do I future proof it by going high refresh 144+ with VRR and HDR? In the hope that Sony eventually comes on board. Or do you think the vast majority of games will be 60 and going for a decent 4k 60 panel with HDR sounds more ideal?

If you decided to create your dream game(s) right now, would you conceive them with retro consoles in mind or with modern machines? In case of the latter, which game engine would you chose, whether it's proprietary or freeware?

What do you want for Christmas this year? Consoles, games, novelty socks?

The Analogue Pocket being the wonderful device it is, what unannounced cores do you dream seeing ported on it ?

Lichdom: Battlemage. £1.34 in PS Store sale. Should I (for PS5)?

How about an analysis of Lichdom Battlemage for PS5/Series consoles?

"Future" Christmas Present - what tech, hardware, innovation or game?

The Wooniest Woona

If Santa came down and told you he'd grant you one Christmas wish to bring back any defunct dev studio, what studio would it be?

Do you think the emergence of more super detailed and realistic game worlds we'll see the emergence of titles that center around virtual tourism and simple exploration? With both Cyberpunk 2077 and the new Matrix Awakens demo, I've gotten hours of enjoyment just walking around without focusing on any sort of objective based gameplay. I'm curious if you feel the same way about these types of experiences.

For the gang: What game was it that started you on the path towards being a digital forger? (forgers work in foundries, right, even digital ones?)

When will we get the next big leap for rendering foliage? Nanite is very good for rendering millions of polygons of continous surfaces like rocks for examples, but it's pretty bad at rendering trees, because of the overdraw and other technical stuff. Do you think in this generation of games trees will only use mainstream way of rendering with alpha textures or nanite or technology similar to it will be used to render trees in more polygon-based way? When will we see a realistic forest without vertex based movement of transparent textures?

Would you like to see more current games get the full ray-tracing treatment in a way that Metro Exodus did? With full ray traced G.I., shadows, etc. What games do you think would benefit the most from getting real time ray traced lighting? I'd personally love to see how it would affect currently pretty flat presentation of Halo Infinite, and I hope to see it in the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 (since they've been working on it for so long)

Hello and happy holidays from Argentina! I’d like to ask if you though of adding a film grain filter percentage as a new way to measure clarity as the matrix awakens demo blew me and made me think that if you add a certain level of film grain to different video game scenes you could get a way to show how good image quality is. I know John might not be a fan of this method but could it be the CRT chosen way to eliminate pixel counting

Playstation VR 2. Will you cover it? The games? The Tech? The people must know! :-D

Anonymous

How much better do you think DLSS can get over time? Is it close to it's max potential, or is there plenty more juice in the tech going forward?

C Nguyen

So we’ve all lamented how poor performance was in games during the 7th generation standardizing 30fps, but I’ve always wondered, was there a technical reason why a lot of games shifted towards dull color palettes of grey and brown? Or was it due to a shift in attitude in the industry

@Alex - do you have any plans to do a video on different forms of rendering techniques e.g. forward rendering vs deferred rendering? How can you tell by looking at a game which is in use? I could google the answer, but I learn better with Turok cut-outs

Hey there, do you think game devs and GPU manufacturers will be transitioning to only raytraced graphics (without rasterization) eventually? And if so, do you think this may be when the next gen consoles launch (PS6 and Xbox TypeX²)? Huge thanks to all of you for the great content!

With the release of Halo is physical media not only redundant on Xbox but of worse value? MS clearly wants its user to sign up to its subscription rental service but I wonder where that leaves the rest of its customer base? Is it a case of get on board or get out of the way. My brand new physical edition of Halo is in effect a digital version minus the convenience of buying digital and without the benefits of the play anywhere service. Regardless of one’s personal purchase preference is selling a non-functional physical format game acceptable or even ethical?

Back in August you were kind enough to address my question asking "what should be the benefit of adaptive sync" because the difference was not observable to me. John pointed out that some people are less sensitive to the issues VRR improves. Rich suggested filming the screen with my phone at a high framerate, which I did, and I was surprised to find there was tearing happening, but I simply never noticed, so thank you. Presumably I am someone less sensitive to tearing. But I have a question now about frame pacing.. I'll generally try to configure each game I play to run around 90 fps or more on my 144hz monitor. The FPS will bounce around 90, 80, 100, etc. I hear so much on your channel about getting "a locked 60" (or some other target number) that I'm left wondering if I am doing something wrong. Am I supposed to find, for every game I play, some low FPS target number that my PC can meet 99.9% of the time, and then limit the game to that number so that every frame is delivered evenly?

Anecdotally, it seems that on average PS5 games have to this point have performed better than their XSX counterparts. Occasionally Series X will target higher resolutions, but often their resolution and graphical settings are the same, but PS5 often has a slight performance edge despite being the slightly less powerful machine. Do you put this down to the change to XDK, and is something that should be expected to change as devs get greater familiarity with the hardware. Also, is Audi actually as tall as he appears in the 12 Days of Phoenix videos, or has he been CGI enhanced?

Reask from last week if john and audi are there: Why is genesis/mega drive audio so hard for emulators to get right?

Have there been any games that stuck out recently as having really good AI powered by the increased CPU floor in current gen?

God evening fellows. Do you think now with new consoles and new technology implemented that we will see maybe games that can use your own face on main protagonist and maybe your own name Outspoken? Been waiting my whole life for something like this and just a quick one, is there any easy way to be ble to use arcade sticks from the ps3/ps4 era on a ps2? Thank you for this year and your hard work, stay safe and ofc, stay retro 💕

Is Parasite Eve a Christmas game or is it a game that's set during the Christmas season?

Anonymous

New subscriber here! Is there any chance you could make a proper "Post Resolution" video laying out the argument for less focus on native 4k resolution in gaming. I know you've sprinkled the topic into various discussions, but I think a proper " expose' "could help people understand the topic and dispel myths. I know that when I heard Richard talk about checkerboard rendering when the PS4 Pro first came out, changed the way I thought about resolution. Thanks!

Happy holidays DF team! Just like your exceptional work on the technical analysis of video game graphics, is there any interest in adding other technical aspects of game development to your analyses? I am troubled by the sorry state of video game AI, and how there's been little progress on that front in years, or even interest from developers. The way deathloop has been praised and awarded despite the scripted AI even regressing from the finite state systems of old, or the death animations being stuck on 6 limb ragdolls physics for 2 decades while the polygon count for rocks doubles every year. Devs used to care immensely about the AI in the times of halo and prey, or physics in half life 2. What are your thoughts about the stasis these aspects of game dev seem to be stuck in?

Question for the team: What is your favourite gaming Remake? Mine has to be Resident Evil Remake since it improved every single facet of the game, graphics and mechanics. It stayed completely faithful to the original and improved it in all areas that needed it while adding new mechaincs like defence weapons, new enemies, bosses and areas with extra content even, like modes, weapons ect. The result was two great versions of the same game and i feel this game is the absolute gold standard of gaming remakes. I feel more modern remakes aren't following this formula so i was wondering what your thoughts were? Merry Christmas.

I just watched your Pocket review and it's a fantastic job as always. Question for the team and more specifically John for DF Retro: do you plan to use a teleprompter for recording your videos? There is no eye contact with the camera during your speaches because (I guess) your camera is above the text you're reading and you read the script not too far from the cam. Having eye contact would improve significantly the (already awesome) quality of the videos. Anyway, thanks again to you the DF team for the excellent work!

Hey DF, wishing a Merry Christmas to you all. What game or piece of tech is at the top of your Christmas lists?

Christoph Zürcher

Question to Alex and the rest of the team: What are your initial impressions of Bohemia Interactives new engine? https://enfusionengine.com/
