Hey Ho everyone, the call for questions comes a bit earlier in the day today since I (Audi) will be at the doctor's most of the evening so getting this sorted before I head out! Naturally, as with any DF Direct Weekly, we need questions, so many questions! So you know the scoop, leave your questions below in the comments and we will pick the most ripe of them to be consumed live on air.

What’s going on with the new game and watch Zelda?

H.H.R

Shin Megami Tensei V performance on the Switch has been pretty rough, especially on portable. Will anyone on the DF team be doing a video on it? Seems like there would be a lot to discuss about the choppy frame rate and dodgy resolution.

Why do so many games release with incorrect frame pacing? And what's a suitable way to go about correcting it?

Anonymous

Well.. First.. Get Better Audi we need ya. Second, we generally don't do this but is it about time we start comparing xCloud versions of games as well? The reason I ask is I have played Halo Infinite on xCloud with Razer Kishi. And my they have done something with the latency.. It feels near native. Do we have any idea how they are pulling this off? Orion from Id Tech in play or something? Edit: for what it's worth even Forza 5 has much much better latency than previous games

If Microsoft is the leading developer of cloud technology, working with Sega and others on this service, why are X Cloud games poorly streamed. I know there are a lot of factors to include but hardwired gigabit internet with high upload speeds can barely run simple games without heavy Pixelmation. FPS games are out of the question and The Ascent resolution is lower than the retro PC time capsule Alex is building.. What is going on with this service and why does it suck?

If a current gen game is played on a console and it’s displayed on a 1080p display, will the game potentially perform better at this lower resolution than with a targeted, but not entirely achieved 4K output during DR benchmarks? I don’t think I’ve ever heard DF’s feedback on this but would love to know the answer. Thanks!

One for John in particular here - I've a P55 connected to my soundbar (sonos beam) here via ARC on my LG C8 TV. There's a noticeable sound delay when having the audio set to PCM (or similar). I've heard that HDfury can fix these issues with audio delay. Is this the only way to fix such issues? The device is 500£, so fairly expensive!

Last week we saw the release of the fairly awful GTA remasters, do you think the game can be made anywhere near decent with patches or are the problems too deeply ingrained with how the game is made? And what other games stand out to you guys as most improved post launch?

Anonymous

UE4 dx12 hdr doesn't always work on pc (clipped highlights, high contrast image) but dx11 hdr works. Example mortal shell, the medium etc. Is there any way a user can fix this?

so I would think that quake 2 rtx is a pretty good remaster, could you explain why quake succeeds while GTA trilogy stumbles (massively), could the trilogy ever be good with a modern (rtx-ish) lighting system and the original polygons?

How's Oliver doing? Putting yourself out there making videos is never easy, even if we Patreons obviously try to give him a warm welcome

Do you think that the Konix Multisystem could be a game changer in the current console space?

The year is 20XX. Now that a long and illustrious career at Digital Foundry has come to an end, you can place your golden joystick retirement gift on your mantelpiece. As you sit out on your veranda sipping cocoa, you reflect that you now have the time to invest in some games from genres like grand strategy, management, RPG etc that might have been too time-intensive to play before. What games from these genres would be high on your list to play during your golden years?

Anonymous

Do you have any plans for coverage when PSVR2 launches (presumably) late next year? There have been a lot of technically interesting vr titles for both Playstation, PC, and Quest during the last couple of years. Would love to see you guys covering it more.

Anonymous

Will you be covering the Hellblade PC update that has just dropped? It has both FSR and DLSS implementations, as well as RT reflections, so it could make it a very useful title for comparisons.

Doesn't this FPS Boost program that we experienced since last february seems weird to you? I mean, it was supposed to be a every-two-weeks release, each time with a few titles, as Jason Ronald stated in interviews last february. But what we got just after was huge months-gap between only 5 FPS Boost waves with almost no coherence whatsoever (the 5 first, 13 EA titles, 74 at once, Dark Souls 3 and now 11 last). That, combined to the vanishing of the resolution boosts that you saw with your own eyes, perfectly working, and I suspect the stats they got, showed a disastrous interest towards those releases. Maybe even worse than the interest towards backward compatibility titles. Which would be a humbling reminder we're very few to really care about those, even if their existence have a big weight in social media conversations. I mean come on, they just celebrated the 20th anniversary of Xbox by killing all those programs with a bullet in the neck. Politely, indeed. But still. It's murder. Or, joke aside, it feels like an total abandon. What do you think of that ?

I was following your coverage of the GTA3 "remaster" and it got me thinking about how recently I've felt that the best way to present older games is at period-appropriate resolutions. So my question is: Do you think there is any scope for future remasters that don't incorporate a massive resolution uplift? I'm thinking that instead the dev would focus on pushing draw distance out, improving the frame rate, adding optional quality of life improvements etc. (e.g. maybe updating control schemes, improve readability of textual elements etc.) and to some extent leave the pixel presentation alone? In the side-by-side shots of GT3 I can't help but conclude that the game looked better on PS2 than on current hardware! In an ideal world we might always wish for old games to be lovingly remade to modern standards without violating the game's original look and feel but we know this is highly demanding and expensive so this isn't always going to be a reasonable expectation. That being the case, could resolution-appropriate "remakes" be more desirable or viable at all or are we just too allergic to pixels these days?

With the limited availability of PlayStation and Xbox consoles continuing for the foreseeable future do you think this will lead to both companies having nearly equal amount of console sold throughout this generation and if so how do you think this might influence game development going though this gen?

In October, there was both a job listing from SIE for a "head of machine learning", as well as the publication of a patent, filed in April, titled "Computer-implemented Method for Completing an Image". The patent goes on to detail image upscaling via machine learning, and frequently mentions VR. This has me wondering what Sony's ambitions are for ML with PS5. As far as I know, the console isn't capable of low precision 4 or 8-bit operations, significantly diminishing its inferencing power. While we've seen developers like Insomniac utilize ML for certain features, like the PS5 version exclusive muscle deformation technology in Miles Morales, I imagine that sort of data isn't anywhere near as demanding or stochastic as image upscaling. My question is: do you forsee a solution that's lacking hardware acceleration to be performant enough to justify over a standard temporal reconstruction? Is it possible this is for a PS5 Pro that could support 4/8-bit operations?

Do you think the gta trilogy can be saved by a small mobile studio?

Destructible environments, when!?

The Wooniest Woona

I've got a 4K TV that can integer scale 1080p to 4K, and it looks amazing. Do you think we'll ever get a scaler that can do something similar to 720p? I imagine that PS3/360 gen games would look a ton better on modern TVs with integer scaling, well the ones that run native 720p at least.

Why are we still not able to sort videos by DATE on "digitalfoundry.net/browse"? ;) Sorry, but it's really uncomfortable to download a NEW released 4K video. You always have to search on YT first, then find the right video you wanna download out of hundreds (thousands?), and then finally download it. I mean, we're we're paying for this and changing that shouldn't be that difficult... Idea: You also could just create monthly folders, that would be a big advancement already! :)

GENTLEMEN! I want to fire a question in your sweet, buttery faces to see what your thoughts are! Indulge meeeeee~! Since the Switch is struggling to hit a consistent 30fps at 480p or lower in some ports of games from the more powerful systems, do you think developers will ever try to lock the frame rate of Switch ports to 20fps? I remember certain N64 games did that just to get them running somewhat consistently, and dynamic resolution can only do so much to help with that. Stay sexy and classy! And be good to yourselves!

You mentioned you would like to start a new show where maybe other questions, such as not necessarily tech related, would get a space to be addressed. Any update on this?

Why do remasters always seem to run worse than the original? FF12 can run at native 4k via an emulator on the same machine that has to run the Zodiac Age at under 1440p.

GT sport on a base PS4 can have some severe drops in performance when most of the cars are close with each other, this is especially noticeable from the cockpit view. Why is it that other games like the F1 series and especially Forza Motorsport games can hold their own quite well in similair situations while also running from base hardware? Is it an engine issue, optimization issue or purely a design choice, as in the visual fidelity is simply to high to ensure a locked 60FPS, please excuse the poor grammar.

With the increasing fidelity of games and some studios pushing for photo-realism, do you envisage a time when we will need to have a real philosophical debate about gore in games?

d0x360

It's basically just cranking the Fidelity up then running with the most demanding scenarios and tweaking from there until you hit your target and then optimizing from there to try and increase fidelity as much as possible without ever going over frame time budget

d0x360

It's not the last. It's the last original Xbox set of games. Also they have said last before so... Is expect more 360 games eventually. It's really up to the publisher not Microsoft. At least we got the 2 best time. Splitters games

d0x360

The codec from mixer certainly helps. So does the fact that MS has Azure data centers all over the world.

Eric Benoit

I was excited to get Otogi 1&2, I hope you're right. I'd like to see Call of Cthulu Dark corners of the Earth and Cold Fear make the list, or at least get a solid remake.

With the Steam Deck looming large and an upgraded model of the Nintendo Switch possibly on the cards for 2022: do you expect Sony or Microsoft to come forward with handheld versions of their consoles anytime soon?

Richard Cross

Do you think the 3 GTA III ports that were recently removed from digital stores will return? Do you think their presence would actually have cannibalised sales of the “Definitive Edition” release? What is currently the best way to play these three games (in as authentic a way as possible) right now, apart from on original hardware?

The Wooniest Woona

Sony X900E. When you put it in graphics mode it does integer scaling for 1080p. I was sad when I upgraded to an LG CX and found out it couldn't do the same thing.

Love this question. The latest Mortal Kombat games really made me wonder this too.

@Tom: recommend me somewhere to eat in Brighton.

I'm on a road-trip right now and have seen dozens of dead animals with their intestines hanging out. It's (thankfully) the only time I've seen that IRL. Seing it IRL hits very differently than just on a screen. VR may change that though.

Can you please do a tech focus on DRS. How does a game engine know of the cost of a frame before it’s fully processed it. Is there known pre-calculated cost for each asset/effect/routine on the screen? Is the scaling just based on the remaining frame time after the CPU work etc. I’m really curious about the different implementations out there.

digitalfoundry

Typically it's because the frame time of the current frame is much the same as the one before it, the one before that and so on. So if you see frame times rising and getting close to or beyond budget, the renderer 'knows what's coming' and can gracefully reduce resolution before exceeding budget.

Anonymous

Oh interesting! So it’s more reactive than predictive? How do engines prevent frame drops in that case before DRS kicks in? Thanks for the response!
