Hi everyone, DF Retro's incredible F-Zero series episode is going live later today, but all supporters on all tiers now have access. I really hope you enjoy it - John and Audi really sunk their all into this one in all dimensions and the content should speak for itself. In terms of production values, if you've kept up with DF Directs, you'll also know that John's green-screen hosting here also used Unreal Engine 5 for the backgrounds!

The next DF Retro episode, concentrating on the brilliant Ridge Racer 6 and Ridge Racer 7 is nearing the end of development and will require a few more days to fully polish up - look out for it very soon.

DF Retro: The F-Zero Saga Revisited - From SNES Launch To GameCube Perfection And Beyond

The game that introduced us to Mode 7 on its launch for Super Famicom and SNES, F-Zero enjoyed a long and distinguished history across three generations of Nintendo home consoles - plus some excellent Game Boy Advance support. But with F-Zero GX, it was also a series that bowed out at its absolute peak. John Linneman and Audi Sorlie assesses the history of the series and the technology that delivered some outstanding futuristic racing. F-Zero GX is my favourite console game of all time - I definitely agree about playing GX on Dolphin these days. But like the video mentions, I would recommend playing with a USB Gamecube controller adapter if at all possible - there's a lot of turns that are tricky to make otherwise (the chicane in Big Blue: Drift Highway is a good example). The GameCube's analogue stick just had a unique level of precision and feel to it that means certain games like GX and Super Monkey Ball don't work as well without one. The story mode was brutal to finish on Very Hard but ultimately very rewarding - unlocking the AX tracks was a great feeling. The only downside of GX is I wish there was more of it - if only there was a remaster with more tracks, online play or the kind of custom track editor we saw in the DD version for X. People have tried to hack the rom to create new tracks but it's still at an early stage I think. Dolphin shows that the game needs very little work done to it apart from upscaling - it's a pity we haven't seen a port. But then again I'm not sure how well it would work with the Switch's analogue stick which still feels like a step back from the Gamecube's after all these years.
