DF crew! What does the gaming landscape look like as we combine local hardware with cloud hardware? Super systems?

Hi DF-Team, I wonder if you guys would be willing to talk about the situation about Japanese game developers/studios nowadays compared to the Japanese "Golden Years". And if you think there will be any kind of comeback whatsoever? Thank you in advance! Cheers :)

With the largely positive reception of FSR by both the tech-press and the general audience, do you think Nvidia will stop improving DLSS. It seems FSR is „good enough“ for most people even for most tech journalists, so why poor resources into DLSS. It’s harder to implement and most people seem hard-pressed to notice the difference to FSR. I personally am a bit disappointed by the coverage (besides DF) which praises FSR more than it deserves.

Maybe not a popular topic, but a tweet from PlayStation back in April stated that 1080p streaming will be rolling out to PS Now. Wonder if this has been covered by DF or could possibly be covered. Would also be interesting to see if this affects non-1080p games like PS3 titles, perhaps with an increase in streaming quality. As well as how performance is running PS Now on PS5. When I first played say MGS4, macro-blocking was really noticeable and persistent. In recent days when I played it since May, it has been significantly reduced, dare I say, almost eliminated. Also despite the update to use HDR only when supported, I don’t know about other users, but PS Now seems to be unaffected as it will continue to run in HDR when the PS Now launches. It does not switch off and go to SDR. Would be interesting to here DF’s input.

Now that we have reached the time of year when we start to see a lot of graphics research getting published, I'd love to know if there are any upcoming techniques or talks that the team are looking forward to hearing more on. e.g. ReSTIR and NRC? #LokhePushedEmbla

There have been a lot of rumors around Silent Hill lately. What road(s) would each of you deeply wish the series takes from now?

Do you realize how much the FW900's price is gonna raise again after your video? DO YOU?! ;-)

Please recommend a book? It can be anything but something related to games, the industry, technology etc would be great.

Hi DF! Will you get the time to have a look at Switch games again? I feel somewhat hesitant to ask because it seems John is the one with the most interest in the Switch and I love his DF Retro work far too much to dare complain. But your excellent Switch coverage has basically been a buyer's guide in the past (and let's face it, no other channels come close to DF-quality) and I've personally put off couple purchases pending a DF analysis. -and you really should have a look at the state Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 on the Switch, it's a doozy.

Hi, A while back, Richard mentioned hearing a story about the Watch Dogs reveal trailer that was so crazy he couldn’t share it until he found an additional source. Did that ever happen? I really want to know the story behind that demo at some point. Keep up the great work!

I'm not DF, but I don't think there's any chance Nvidia stops working on DLSS right now. FSR doesn't really offer what DLSS or other temporal reconstruction techniques can do. DLSS is still best-in-class for what it is. FSR may seem "good enough," but I think that's stemming from a misconception thanks to misinformation that FSR is AMD's DLSS, when in reality, FSR doesn't really reconstruct the image, and other better upscaling techniques already exist in game engines that could likely see more usage. Also, if FSR is to improve further significantly as a standalone technique, it'll probably have to transition to being a temporal solution where, just like with DLSS, it'll become harder to implement.

Hi, DF! Hope you're all doing well :) Coming up on Episode 18 now, how is it like to film these Direct Weekly segments? Is there anything behind the scenes that makes putting these together perhaps more difficult than we are aware of? Any fun bloopers or outtake moments?

What game(s) do you think will be the first to support DirectStorage on PC? Personally, I think Forza Horizon 5 is a good candidate to have it as an option, to enable the highest quality LOD.

There appear to be serious performance issues with DLSS in this new DOOM ETERNAL update when it is first turned on (15 - 20 fps). I have to do lots of graphical disabling and re-enabling (including DLSS and RT) to then have it perform as expected (60-120 fps with a 2080 at 1440p depending on the size of the part of the level I'm in). Have you guys experienced these same issues? I am also running Windows 11, but haven't had any issues with other games I've tested.

Is there a benefit to using super sampling on a lower resolution display over a 4K native display?

digitalfoundry

We've heard others report this but don't see it on our systems. Can you maybe use NvShare to take a capture? At least we'd have some more to go on.

If you had to make a choice, would you buy a good quality crt for retro gaming (PS1 specifically) or hang on for the PS1 digital, knowing that availability may be some way off?

Anonymous

It seems many if not all games that offer ray tracing options, were made first for traditional rasterization. Is the dream where games are made from the ground up with in reach this generation? Perhaps after we leave prior gen hardware behind?

sj33 (Jake)

Hi all! With games like e.g. Scarlet Nexus which target 60fps but tend to drop a few frames below that, why don't developers implement dynamic resolution scaling if supported by the engine? Being a mere handful of frames below the target, it seems like the resolution would not actually have to scale that much to hit constant 60.

Anonymous

The game does implement dynamic resolution scaling, it's just not aggressive enough

Anonymous

What features graphically or otherwise, that have not yet been realized or fully realized would you like to see in this generation?

Anonymous

Hi DF homies 💕 This is more of a retro crt question. I recently bought a Bang olufsen crt mx7000 without any kind of info manual and are wondering how clueless people like me can know if the TV in question supports rgb without any special equipment. It got 2 scarts and and should you remove the front glass for better picture? P. S any chance to make a DF Retro ps2 2d collections games like fatal fury battle archives volume 2 that get a rerelease from limited run games on the ps4? Thank you for your time 💕

What title do you guys anticipate being the next milestone in bleeding edge video game graphics in the near future, and why?

Anonymous

Games are primarily visual, and the way a game looks and animates in response to player input is critical to how a game is enjoyed. Does the popularly held distinction between “gameplay” and “graphics” ever bother you? Or do you think the concepts are easily separable?

Anonymous

Was gonna ask this too. 40 FPS modes for 120hz displays are quite interesting.

Is this me or have Japanese developed video games and Anime making a big resurgence in the later half of the 2010 decade to the present moment because both had a slump only to make a comeback recently!

Anonymous

I know Sony is heavily invested in Anime, not just ownership of streaming and subscription services but they were involved in the biggest Japanese Movie of the year that Mugen Train one. In fact they are so involved in Anime the US department of Justice launched a review of its last purchase fearing monopoly. No idea if it more prevalent in games, it’s always been in Japan maybe it’s just a case they are translating more with the growth of Anime in the west.

I would like to know if the charming and effervescent Kazuko Shibuya did the art for the new FF pixel remaster games for Square? Her new work was displayed in the FF Dot book, is it the same art? She touched on some of the points John’s recent CRT video made in that updating the designs are essential for modern hardware as the older work was designed with CRT’s as the primary medium of display.

tod weitzel

“Frame rate, resolution, or ray tracing, pick two” seems to be the way ps5 titles are going. Do you think ray tracing will get left behind as too specialized a technology once we get into the later half of this generation? Could being stuck with 2021 era ray tracing hardware as we get into 2026 or later become a hindrance?

One for Alex; With DLSS, is it better to use 4k with performance mode, or 1440p with balanced? What are the internal resolutions for each? And with DLSS now being so good at upscaling, do you think we'll get the originally touted supersampling? like applying DLSS to a 4k image and downsampling the result back to 4k? (or 4k down to 1440p?)

d0x360

Personally at 4k I would go with balanced OR try playing at 3200x1800.
