Hi everyone - and so the E3 week comes to an end, and we actually find ourselves 'Directed Out', which is to say with multiple E3 commentary videos under our belts, there's nothing left in the tank for the usual weekly show - but do not fear, they shall return! What we have instead is a bunch of videos ready to go and queued up for release on YouTube across the weekend and into early next week, so Premium and Retro supporters get to see them early.

That starts with John and Audi's look at the E3 demo for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. More to come, but in the meantime, dig in. Here's your download page: https://digitalfoundry.net/2021-06-18-stranger-of-paradise-final-fantasy-origin-demo-first-look

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Demo First Look

It's very, very early days for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin - nevertheless, Square-Enix did release a 1080p-only demo for PlayStation 5 and while certainly very very far from completion, there's plenty to talk about here. Which is precisely what John Linneman and Audi Sorlie do right here for your enjoyment. I think Square Enix deserve credit as over the past few years they have tried to feature more gameplay in presentations. To release a single player, early development E3 vertical slice directly to the public is commendable. It would’ve been far safer to release the game relying on franchise attachment for sales but I find it encouraging for the development potential the studio opted to seek direct player feedback. Studios traditionally prefer closed door showings to journalists, understandably as the public aren’t generally regularly exposed to early stage development. The demo was slightly botched and delayed in the initial release resulting in negative coverage. Do you expect the public could see more early stage single player game demos distributed as events move online or are the risks and effort simply not worth it? On a side note, what a puzzlingly terrible decision to release the final fantasy pixel remastered collection exclusively to PC / mobile and ignore consoles.
