Hi everyone, a two-in-one post today owing to the public holiday on Monday. First of all, we're looking for questions for the next DF Direct Weekly. We'll be talking about the Computex news, including the new Nvidia cards, AMD's FSR upscaling and some Doom Eternal RT action. We'll also be discussing Dying Light 2 and Far Cry 6 gameplay reveals. If you've got any questions about this - and indeed anything else - just pop a comment in the box below.

In terms of what's happening this week:

* John is working on a project we can't discuss more fully right now, but it is shaping up beautifully.

* Alex has just finished the new episode of Tech Focus based on Global Illumination, which will roll out to Patreon Premium and Retro supporters in the next couple of days.

* Rich working on hardware reviews for the RTX 3080 Ti and the Core i5 11400F!

* Alex has teamed up with the brilliant EposVox to take a look at the upcoming improvements to the classic Halo Combat Evolved for the Master Chief Collection's Season 7. Has 'proper' Halo been fully fixed? You'll find out soon.

* We're also looking to cover Watch Dogs Legion's 60fps patch, and perhaps Necromunda. Oh, and we think we've found someone suitable to tackle Final Fantasy 14 on PlayStation 5!

Patreon supporter content? We're looking to roll out a new DF Retro Play this week, Alex's Tech Focus and of course, Classic FPS Remastered - this time concentrating on the truly classic Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Those vintage 2010 hard drives continue to deliver!

Lots going on then, but in the meantime, let's have your questions!

With so many games being made 60fps through back compatibility and even cross gen and next gen games such as Demon's Souls having options for 60fps do you guys think this option will be more common throughout this generation? Or will we see a slide back to 30fps as development moves to next gen only

Is there any particular game you are hoping to see more of at E3 / Summer Games Fest?

With AMD pushing for FSR to be more open vs DLSS is there a chance we see FSR being the upscaling / AA tech of choice for devs vs DLSS? My brain makes me think it’s a possibility but might take a while. It sounds tempting since devs will most likely be able to use a single technology across both the PC builds as well as the consoles vs using FSR specifically for PS5 / XSX and then support DLSS on the PC side (if at all). Y’all are attractive and make my wife jealous. Good day to you all.

About 10 years ago, a rather infamous voxel-based “unlimited detail” graphics demo was released by an Australian company called Euclideon. Looking at UE5’s Nanite system, it seems to share some of the implementation details (sampling geometric detail based on output resolution) and limitations (limited to static geometry). Is Nanite just “unlimited detail” but with polygons instead of voxels?

I know it's a bit early to tell, but what are DF's expectations when it comes to AMD's FSR? Will this offer a benefit when compared to inhouse scaling solutions like the engine of Isomniac games for example? Wouldn't it be quite similar by nature? While I think it's great that it runs on almost everything, it also causes some concern when you compare it to DLSS for example which does require it's tensor cores.

You mentioned it's sometimes not so easy to watch video files on PC. (Question was about 120fps files.) What's the best program to do that with what settings? I'm watching on VLC and have sometimes glitchy artifacts watching your videos. PC should be fast enough with i9-10850k and RTX 3060Ti. Sometimes you offer the videos on multiple codecs. What's the best one?

Where's Tom?!? Tom me up!

> Has 'proper' Halo been fully fixed? MCC is still missing split-screen multiplayer on PC, what are your thoughts on that? Can you think of any technical reasons, why is it not implemented? Workaround using "Nucleus Co-Op" is quite seamless experience, but still just a workaround.

You've done excellent work on the history of genres, individual games, graphics technologies etc. I'd love to see you do a breakdown of the history of physics and AI in games. How they started out and evolved (and devolved!) over time. Is this something we can hope to see in the future?

Hi, DF. I hope you're all doing well! Sorry if this is redundant since you'll be covering FSR already. AMD has finally released *some* information on FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) in an initial look. Some are already proclaiming the death of DLSS! Whereas I am not so convinced. Though it's commendable that FSR is open source and will be compatible across multiple GPU generations and vendors, do you think this technology will be as impactful as DLSS since it does not utilize any form of deep learning hardware? I recall DLSS 1.0 received fairly critical backlash for its image quality results, and I can't imagine this performing better without taking advantage of specialized hardware. Is it too early to claim widespread adoption for FSR? Should I just learn to be patient for further news? Am I cheating for asking multiple prompts in my question? Looking forward to hearing your discussion and watching future content!

The race for a new game machine is one of the best books I've ever read-kudos to John Linneman for the recommendation. Have you guys ever tried to get an interview with David Shippy, the author and chief architect of the ps3/360 CPU for DF retro? It would be awesome!

Anonymous

It's abit worrying that the only game they have confirmed it running in is GodFall of all things and 'launch' is 3 weeks away. Makes me think it's not any easier than DLSS to implement. Do we know anything about how developers would implement FSR into their games? Also very interested in seeing a direct head to head if they are ever both supported in the same game.

Question for DF Weekly: will Tom’s hair ever stop growing and if not how long until he starts DF’s own metal band with Alex?

Maybe fourth time's the charm, but: We've yet to have a "next-gen" racing game, as far as I know. Considering the cumulative nature of raytracing, are racing games like the upcoming GT7 and the next two Forzas at a RT disadvantage, compared to most other games, especially in lighting? That being said, how excited are you for GT7's photo mode?

DF question! - Do subscription services like Game Pass/PS/EPIC etc. devalue games?

Sven Dahlin

We have seen games and demos (Minecraft, Quake, NVIDIA Marbles) implementing full path tracing and moving away from hybrid rendering. Path tracing can potentially bring CGI-levels of visual quality. Rendering could be massively parallelised (memory bandwidth might be an issue, though). But, moving to path tracing requires big changes in graphics hardware and in game development; it is a chicken or the egg situation. Do you think path tracing is the “endgame” for graphics in games, with rasterization disappearing altogether? If so, how many years/decades do you think the transition will take?

With Nanite being all the rage with the early access release of UE5, do you guys think that the pursuit for movie-quality polygon count or, as John stated in the Marbles demo, a "polygon per pixel" presentation, will lead to a creative stagnation in the gaming industry once it is finally achieved on PCs and consoles?

Anonymous

Why do you think that both Sony & Microsoft partnered with AMD in both the eighth and ninth generation of consoles? Would there not have been a push to use chips from rival companies? And how could a console made with Nvidia hardware have differed?

Anonymous

Have you considered doing more retro hardware videos? For example modding and repair? Maybe you could do some more MVG collabs

What kind of audio setups does the DF crew have/recommend for gaming? There’s a lot of talk and agreement on displays for gaming, but not much in the way of audio discussion out there

The “cinematic 30fps” thing is a bit of a meme, but do you think there are any games where that logic applies and 30fps would be preferable to 60fps even with identical visual quality? I think some games with slow gameplay and an anime aesthetic, like Persona 5, sort of work better at 30fps as they are referencing a visual medium with a very low framerate.

Anonymous

I think we will get 60fps over the whole generation. The transition started already with One x and PS4 pro.

Anonymous

My guess is that AMD can deliver both CPU and GPU, so there are high synergy effects and the best overall performance with a certain budget.

Anonymous

Last gen games as an art form where held back by the relative paltry increase in power that the CPU side of the consoles received, in many ways games didn't get any more systemically complex and PS4/Xone games are basically just very, very pretty PS3/360 games. With that being said, how long do you think it will be before we see devs harness those zen2 cores for gameplay/design reasons, rather than pushing 60fps.

Bryan McIntosh

The latest DF Retro talked about the 3dfx Voodoo marking a turning point for 3D graphics, but which new graphics chipset/card do you think was the biggest inflection point of the past twenty or so years? Was it the Radeon 9700 Pro that introduced Shader Model 2.0 and was damned fast at it? The 8800 GTS that brought DX 10 shaders to the table and a pile of VRAM for the time? Did Tahiti make a big splash by being really, REALLY good at compute? Or was Maxwell/Pascal the big point where we saw a massive improvement in performance per watt? I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Anonymous

Good point. I'd add actual cinematic games such as the excellent Detroit.

Hey DF! The recent AMD Computex presentation was followed by a flood of understandable comparisons between FSR and Nvidia's DLSS. Now, are the two techs actually comparable? Does the AMD approach leverage AI/ML at all? Isn't it more fair to compare FSR to UE5's super resolution?

Hello DF Crew! After hearing the announcement for Crysis 2 and 3 Remastered, I was reminded of a video that was made back when Alex was fairly new about Crysis 2 and how its design was influenced by the need to run on the memory-constrained consoles of the day. In that video, the possibility of another video in the same format about Crysis 3 is mentioned. News of a remaster might make this a fine time to consider that video. Thanks as always, love all the content that the crew produces. Especially about Crysis. :)

DF Question, first ever after becoming a supporter but a continuation of my comment on YouTube with regards to SteamPal, Is there a specific reason why DF doesn't cover Cloud gaming services? If not Stadia then what about xCloud and PSNow? And specially from the PC side GeForce Now or Shadow and/or maybe more? For somebody who's life schedule does not allow proper PC gaming anymore, I have found that recent enhancements to some of these services does give an easy and accessible outlet to play and enjoy some of those PC games on TV and mobile devices along with Xbox and PS5.

Question about the Rage engine: I'm curious to know if you notice the improvement to foliage performance from GTAV to RDR2. In gta V(specially with the very high and ultra setting) the tall grass in places like around the military base area the frames are super low in comparison to any other area of the map, and I remember Richard talking about bandwith limitations in some video, lutting the camera infron of a lot of grass was even worse. In RDR2 this problem is non existen, Could you explain how the could have achieved this??

Hugo Stiglitz

I'm sure you are aware of youtubes heavy compression and bitrate limits. I've always wondered why for Nintendo Switch content, you guys don't upload at 4k or even 1440p to bypass the strict bitrate limits? The bitrate limits on youtube are based on the resolution of the content being uploaded so even a 540p game will look better uploaded at 1440p than 1080p, let alone 4k which allows up to a 30 Mbps bitrate on YT.

As a Pc/playstation gamer am I better getting a ps5 or a 3080 for 4k tv gaming?. I'm on a GTX1080 using resolution slider and high to med graphics all the time. Which should I choose when things in retail normalise?

When will the 9th gen cross gen phase phase out 2022 or 2023?

I would love some discussion around audio and the best setup for console gaming. I've personally been having some issues with audio delay on a TV using a soundbar, but also on one of my TVs with audio coming through the speakers. I would love to know your best practices for unlocking higher quality audio while not sacrificing audio sync issues on modern setups. I've now got a situation where my soundbar is useless, while gaming on my LG CX OLED through speakers works perfectly. However, using a decent but still midrange Panasonic model gives me an audio delay whether I use a soundbar or through the internal speakers. Just wanted to know what your AV setups were like as I trust you guys with this stuff!
