In this week's Direct, Microsoft says you don't need an Xbox to play Xbox - but if they're talking about streaming on a Fire Stick 4K, we'd beg to differ. Meanwhile, Alex talks about a 1.4GHz CPU overclock for the OG Xbox and shares his thoughts on the new Black Myth: Wukong full RT assets and benchmarks. Oliver tests out Ace Combat 7 on Switch, while Rich checks out frame generation on the First Descendant - in 30fps fidelity mode, 40fps balanced mode and 60fps performance mode. How high does frame-rate get - and are the lower fps modes a write-off?

I think we have to remember that there are families out there that just want to be able to play games with others and streaming seems like a good entry point. My kids, my nieces and nephews and their cousins have zero interest in how the game looks, as long as they can play with their friends. After saying that, Microsoft are still shocking with their quality of product as Alex says across all areas.

Interested in that question and idea around a new Steam Box. Agree that it should be a Valve only box. As some thoughts 1) they might (should?) get headroom to explore more powerful chips and to have a higher power ceiling if they did a dedicated box rather than a handheld. More space and always connected power might open up a bit more performance, even if they don’t explore super powerful chips and target relatively similar price points. 2) My understanding is that having a fixed platform Valve controls such as the Steamdeck, and unlike the old Steam Boxes, would allow Valve to offer pre-compiled shader caches that helps address issues with games stutter and was part of what allowed them to treat such issues with Elden Ring post release, even on a modest hardware chipset. That seems like one compelling advantage of a controlled platform over a standard PC. Combination of (1) and (2) might differentiate the device from a Deck while still having benefits over a PC, particularly for people who fancy a console experience but want access to PC games, free online etc and those other costs mentioned in the MS segment associated with consoles. They could also stick to the same chips on point (1) and just ship a lower cost device due to not needing to supply a display.
