After nearly a week of marathoning both the main scenario and ALL of the side content of Final Fantasy XVI, here's my full review:
Leslie and I started Final Fantasy VI for the first time right after beating that game and immediately had more fun.
Like, don't get me wrong, FFXVI absolutely hits what it's aiming for it and it does it well. I just... don't think Leslie and I really liked what it was aiming for. We started out with high hopes and were onboard with it initially, but then it just sort of dragged on and on, maintaining the same dreary tone for 50+ hours, with absolutely no variety in its mission/sidequest structure. By the end of the game, we were completely checked out... only to realize we weren't done and had at least 15 more hours to go.
Is it the best action combat Final Fantasy has ever had in its franchise history? You know, I wrote that sentence thinking I'd immediately follow it up with "yes", but then I remembered the crazy variety of playstyles Strangers of Paradise (chaos bullshit game) and now I'm not even sure on that. But even then, combat ain't really what I go to Final Fantasy for. I want to be immersed in a fun, encompassing world with a variety of lovable characters, engaging in a bunch of wild shit that no other game would have me do, all the while hitting me with a gripping and surprisingly mature story. And then I realize, Like a Dragon was what I wanted out of Final Fantasy XVI all along. It's funny that Sega found massive success out of the gamble of taking Yakuza into RPG territory while Square Enix is deathly afraid to go back to it. Ah well. Can't wait to play more FFVI, though.
Also god damn, that second panel is gorgeous in how lewd it is~
See you on Monday!
