I couldn’t relate more to Malaki’s experience. I also grew up Mormon and went on a two-year mission between 2005-07. Most Mormons, including myself prior to my mission, avoid R rated movies, so the first time I ever “experienced” Goodfellas, Fight Club, and Pulp Fiction were when a fellow missionary recounted the plots of the movies in incredible detail. After that I was hooked. Not as good as the real thing of course, but when you’re deprived of secular media for two years, it was riveting entertainment. After two years of consuming only religious media (which was somehow way worse than it sounds) I was giddy with excitement to watch a movie during the flight home. That movie was Spiderman 3. Even in my desperate hunger for secular media I remember being bored and disappointed. Despite my best efforts to catch up on what I missed, to this day I still learn about movies that came out during that two-year period that everyone else seems to know about.
