It’s the dawn of a new era in America. David, Devindra, and Jeff are joined by Drew McWeeny (@DrewMcWeeny), writer of newsletter Formerly Dangerous, to discuss the new film News of the World. Does this reunion of director Paul Greengrass and actor Tom Hanks create the same buzz as Captain Phillips?

Hi Slashfilmcast Team. Just wanted to say that I enjoyed your brief chat on VR and how it allows for watching movies. I live in the UK and we have a total lockdown making going to the movies a thing of the past. This however only pushed me more into finding alternatives and whats more, a way to stay in touch with family members that are spread in2 different countries across Europe. Using the Oculus Quest and Big Screen, you can in fact watch your own content together. One option is for the host of a room to share his PC screen on the virtual big screen and another is to all have the same file of a movie and then use the movie playing app inside Big Screen to run the movie syncronised. The second option is better as the quality is as good as your Headset screen allows for since its played locally and does not depend on a stream coming from the host of the room. We have since been watching anything from joint favourites such as Alien, Taxi, Blade Runner to hard to find and only locally known movies from our early childhood. The highlight is of course the discourse we have during and after the movie with every week taking turns on what is to be watched next week. This weekend we will be watching Dune and I cant wait. While the resolution is not 4K by any means, it now is at a point (especially for Quest2 and HP Reverb users) that you can sit through a 2 hour movie and forget you are not in a real cinema surrounded by friends. As an extension, we are now adding in a 30 minute game session pre movie as well now (often Table Tennis or Golf) which allows a catchup on weekly events as well. I suggest you try that out as I can well imagine all three of you enjoying a movie together in VR and then talking about it in your afterdark.
