Krista's Garden Tour! April/May 2023

April 2023 Garden Tour! Some big changes are shaping up in my yaaaaard here in Zone 6. It's mainly in the form of mulch but also I'm slowly levelling up my aesthetic gardening skills as well (flower suggestions welcome). A couple notes about things mentioned: 1. Info about invasive Star of Bethlehem from WVU: https://extension.wvu.edu/lawn-gardening-pests/weeds/star-of-bethlehem 2. Info about invasive Honeysuckle from UK Department of Forestry: https://forestry.ca.uky.edu/japanese-honeysuckle 3. Info about Peach varieties for KY from the UK extension office: http://www2.ca.uky.edu/agcomm/pubs/ho/ho6/ho6.pdf I chose the Red Haven cultivar because it was common in local nurseries + it has decent resistance to a lot of diseases. We'll see how it turns out! 4. Video about planting fruit trees in clay: https://youtu.be/hM-OklXmxzA My soil isn't fully clay, but there's a layer of hard pan below the sandier stuff up top. I dug a test hole before I planted, and then waited to see how long rain water drained out of it and it took... a while lol. This woman is also gardening Zone 6 and generally has good advice; and thus far my peach trees are doing well following her method of planting. The main thing is keeping them slightly above grade + lots of organic matter in the bottom of the hole. 5. Info about the Persimmon trees I ordered, from University of KY: https://www.uky.edu/hort/Common-Persimmon I'm growing an American variety like this, native to the Eastern US. We thought one of our azaleas (our only one) was going to croak. Just kept losing all its leaves, and getting more and more scrawny. But at the last moment, some little green leaves started growing around the bottom. Now the weather is much better, though it's an indoor plant, and Ms Azalea is kind of thriving!

I love your property and garden area! I live in a city right now, so I only have a raised bed garden and a few potted plants. I went all in on lilies this year. I planted 16 white lilies, 16 red lilies, and 2 lilies of the valley. I went with flowers this year to focus on bees. My favorite tree by far is the oak tree. Take good care of him!

77 miles is respectable... how many days? 7 days walking? Looking at where your garden is at and some of your choices, I realize that growth zones differ quite a bit from here (Near Stockholm, Sweden). We couldn't even dream of growing peaches.

7 days, 6 nights. Started late on a Saturday and completed it Friday at noon. Backpacked the entire thing! We're Zone 6 here in KY by the USDA Hardiness Zone map, not sure what the equivalent would be for Europe. You might be surprised what can tolerate a cold winter! Apples for example require a certain number of "chill" hours each year to produce well. -K

Middle eastern ( not asian ) Persimmon are freaking delicious but hard to grow.
