It's the weekly news!

Special Treat: Since some of you asked/thought you could clean up the audio a bit more:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Pndmz1_Mpy0go1ZJo2oGz3ojgNFdf2sV

This is the G-drive link to the unedited first episode of the news. All we're doing is adding -9db of noise suppression and a software compressor to bring up the mids.

The hardware mixer, a presonus something, is not doing the compression anymore. We turned the gain on the 48v phantom power to the mics up such that the levels coming in to the camera seemed reasonable, but otherwise the mixer board isn't doing anything in terms of compression or leveling or anything.

OBS does have the noise filter (-16) and compressor (9db output gain on the compressor,  otherwise at OBS defaults on the compressor).

This audio is the raw OBS recording. If you want to give us a hint about the software process, let us know.

What we try to do, and this may make things worse, is to try to get youtube to report in "stats for nerds" when you right click to say about -1 db.

But we also don't want to spend $50k on audio gear :D

Though we might actually need to spend more than $300 on mics since this is more or less "raw" and it doesn't sound quite as good, to me, as last week's audio.

EDIT: I might have linked the wrong YT vid. Full news now up. Oops.

I'm not an expert but I think you still need a lot more gain. That boosting the mids is going a bit too low and making your voices sound drony/muffled and very bass heavy. And the highs could honestly use a good boost, which could be because of the noise supression filter though. I wouldn't be surprised if all of this could be solved by more gain at the end of the day.

more gain at the board was peaking too often (we peaked about 4 times in the raw recording) so.. you are probably right but the idea is probably around a compressor bringing up the quiet parts and not raising the parts that are peaking or near peaking. Interestingly youtube reports a content loudness of -2.5db which is not too bad

Yeah some normalization would definitely be nice. I know it's probably not kosher but personally I would find the point where you actually get clipping on the mic and then back off a bit, just to make sure your sound board isn't causing you guys to be too conservative. Most amplifiers sound a lot more natural close to their higher limits (75-90%), and the mid bass hump and lack of trebel is a classic sign of just needing to crank things up a bit more.

Will there be full news released today?

If you guys want to up your lighting quality on your future videos, I'd suggest picking up the "AW Pro 19" Dimmable Ring Light" from Amazon for $72.95. It's extremely bright and doesn't give harsh shadows and you can mount the camera in the middle of the ring.

The audio sounds really, really muffled now. I feel like the audio keeps getting worse. It used to be just quiet but now it's both quiet and muffled.

haaaa sorry. Busy week. Check the vid now, should be full news.

Hmm, audio person here. To me this sounds like too much denoiser, which in this case can make it sound like a "deEsser" is being used, cutting the vocal "esses" and making it sound muffled and unnatural. It's ok, it's a common thing I see, a little mic noise is perfectly acceptable and more natural. Alot of the creators I've worked with see any noise as a bad thing. Regarding the compression, I think its fine, just maybe need "normalization" or a "limiter" at the end of your chain so you get to at least -1.0db on youtube. Also for anyone having audio issues, I'd recommend the free Chrome extension "Audio Channel" it has a limiter and EQ, been using that on all the news videos ;). Love the show.

The raw audio you've attached sounds better to me to the one that is processed... The processed one is very boomy.

To me the sound is fine, of course I'm 50 years old and I'm sure my hearing isn't nearly what it used to be. Plus I'm not an audiophile. I mean, spotify sounds fine to me playing through a Google Home Mini so what do I know? LOL!!!

Hey just wondering if it possible to get this edition of the news in podcast form? It’s the only thing tying me to YouTube and I be very happy to get away from them Not sure if it’s something I’ve missed but the podcast that comes with the patron support is like a q&a thing and I’m not so interested in that

Don’t peak on the board, ever, you shouldn’t even be close. Step 1, record in 24bit. You have more than enough resolution to go a little low and level in post. Step 2, shoot for between -12 and -6 off the board nominal, peaks at no more than -3 maybe. Step 3, check where applying your gain. Proper gain staging says you don’t have a knob set higher than the next in the chain. So set your master at unity, your channels at 0, dial in pres to hit the levels as stated. If using channel eqs, try to always cut. Always turn on the bass cut if it’s there, except on krista, she needs the 25hz rumble

Have you tried using youtube-dl to just make yourself an mp3? I have a script to just grab everything and shove it into the mp3 format.

Is it possible to write something like that which would check for new uploads from a channel, change then to mp3 and create my own private podcast feed? (Don’t know much about these things]

It sounds like the OBS noise suppressor is cutting into the presence and higher end frequencies of your dialogue. For starters raise 5,100 on the EQ and look at the higher end frequencies... up to 10,000. If your background noise isn't too bad you might consider recording with the ORTF Stereo setup. I've started doing that with my podcasts using a Tascam DR-40 (old, around $199) and have gotten really nice results. (here's and example where you can see the tascam in the wide shot https://youtu.be/DoWUeOQ2ko8 )
