I agree with your point that good portrait photography includes all types of people not just beautiful models. Some great portraits are taken of all types of people in their own space instead of a studio.

I have not done a good job of asking people if I can take a portrait shot. When I have had the courage to do that nicely, I have been surprised at how many are comfortable with it.
