This month’s challenge for flame members was on creating snow studies! Participants had the option to make close-up studies of snow, or just paint snowy landscapes. I did a mix of those! Snow is challenging to draw - getting the colors right and getting that mix of fluffy and solid shapes was harder than I thought it would be. So I took a few different approaches with all of these sketches and studies! Which one do you think worked out best?

Flame members also get the full process video, plus a resource that talks you through my process and explains my creative choices in making these studies. It also discusses common mistakes and gives some tips! Those will be posted tomorrow, so keep an eye out for it!

If you want to participate next month, I’ll be posting next month’s challenge on the 1st of January ~ just like last month’s challenge, it will include:

  • Tips and suggestions
  • Reference images
  • Inspiration images
  • A list of resources to help you complete the challenge
  • A bonus challenge for those who want to invest more time

If you want to participate and you’re not yet a flame member, be sure to upgrade your membership to get access to the challenge! New challenges get posted on the 1st of every month. For now, I hope you like these portraits ✨

These are all fantastic but I especially love the smooth mountain drifts! We’re having such a warm, dry winter in Montreal and this is making me miss the snow ❄️
