This month’s challenge for flame members was on creating stylized portraits! Specifically based on the workflow described in the tutorial on creating interesting and eye-catching reference studies. Here’s my take on the challenge! I focused on using a technique where I combine the lasso tool and a speckly, grainy airbrush to build volumes. I got kind of carried away with one of the portraits and it ended up being a bit more rendered than I had planned to make it!

Flame members also get the full process video, plus a resource that talks you through my process and explains my creative choices in making these studies. It also discusses common mistakes and gives some tips! Those will be posted tomorrow, so keep an eye out for it!

If you want to participate next month, I’ll be posting next month’s challenge on the 1st of December ~ just like last month’s challenge, it will include:

  • Tips and suggestions
  • Reference images
  • Inspiration images
  • A list of resources to help you complete the challenge
  • A bonus challenge for those who want to invest more time

If you want to participate and you’re not yet a flame member, be sure to upgrade your membership to get access to the challenge! New challenges get posted on the 1st of every month. For now, I hope you like these portraits ✨

When I was 18 I could stare open-mouthed at the works of certain artists. I could be completely amazed or blown away. (My master teacher to name one.) Over the years I lost this feeling. Now I consider many artists' work to be beautiful. But no longer in awe of their work. This latest rendered work of yours has given me that feeling again. Total admiration of a work. I thought this was no longer possible. It is extremely beautiful. It’s totally my cup of tea. A very sincere congratulations. 🙏

These are beautiful! I'm loving the new technique as well, very cool style with the speckled brushes. I really need to try greyscale painting, just focusing on the values seems like a good exercise!

I definitely recommend it! It’s really nice to just be able to focus on the shapes and not worry about the colors.
