I wanted to make some skin studies with this one, and more specifically skin that has a lot of blemishes on it. I’ve had acne since a very young age, and because of it I was put on hormonal birth control when I was just 12. Last year, after almost 25 years of taking birth control pills, I decided I was going to stop taking it because I felt like it had a lot of negative side effects, including for my mental health.

I’m really glad that I quit, but my acne has returned and sometimes it’s really challenging. I can’t help but feel a sense of shame when my skin breaks out, even though it’s just genetic for me: I inherited it from my dad. Strangely enough, I would never judge anybody else for having blemished or imperfect skin. I don’t think it takes away from anybody’s beauty. But it’s hard to apply that mindset to myself. So I drew this artwork to try and process some of these emotions. I hope you like these!

Wow acne! I just got over a stubborn round. My acne is like 95% triggered by what I eat, so at least I sort of have an idea of why it happened, when a new outbreak starts lol... That said, your confidence still takes a hit when your skin has been good for a while and then it suddenly isn't! Your last paragraph is super relatable!

Just figured I'd add some of the danger foods in case others want to experiment with cutting out certain foods: Causes acne, be careful: Dairy... all dairy (rip) Cheese (yes, that's dairy but I'm adding it a second time for emphasis) Pork Fried foods Most oils (especially chili oil) Mayonnaise Might cause acne: Bread CERTAIN brands of oat milk (they add oil to make it more "barista-friendly") Delicious sauces and dressings that probably contain oil Safe: Beef (surprisingly) Fish Chicken Veggies Tofu Chocolate, as long as it's not too cheap (thank goodness for this) Black coffee, tea etc.. The acne-free food path is healthy but lonely.. lol

Thank you for portraying real people. You are one of the few artists who doesn't stick to drawing "beautiful" perfect girls. And yep, acne is not just a phase, unfortunately. I am 38 yo, and my acne cleared up like 10 years ago, I also stopped taking birth control (the worst treatment) I changed my diet to a low-sugar one, I lost weight (insulin-related) and I saw a big change. Love your work!
