Some cloud studies! I always feel like my approach to clouds reflects my artistic confidence. When I’m feeling more unsure, the clouds I draw tend to turn out soft and formless. When I’m feeling more focused and confident, the shapes become more clear and have some exaggeration and gesture to them. I feel less afraid to divert from the reference image. I’ve been in a much better creative flow lately and I think that shows in these studies purely from the more defined shapes in them! For comparison, here are some older cloud studies I did in 2020.

I feel like this must be different for every artist. How can you tell when you’re feeling more confident with your skills?

for me is the way i draw characters/people, when i’m in a good mood or in a good creative flow my art just feels and looks better instead of when im stressed or unmotivated. these clouds are beautiful, they feel so full of life💖

I love the way you draw clouds! I really need to do some studies to get better at them, those inspire me a lot And I never thought about clouds as a reflection of our confidence as an artist, that's really interesting! I'll pay more attention to how I approach them.

Oh these are lovely! I love the middle one with the dark foreground. I never thought to study clouds as an exercise, I often go to trees and plants. But I think I'll give clouds a try sometime!

Like you mentioned in your video "TUTORIAL // a roadmap for artistic growth", when I have enough headspace to not really having to focus on what I'm doing to the degree of getting a headache. Kinda, although you didn't say anything about headaches that I remember, that was my own addition.

These clouds are fantastic! I definitely see the difference in confidence from the previous ones. Clouds (for me anyway) are so hard as well, to make them light and fluffy but also actually have BODY. For me confidence comes through in the looseness of what I draw. When I'm feeling a bit rubbish about my skills everything is really stiff, but when I'm happy I create quite fun and story-like illustrations that I really love :)

thanks! i think clouds are a great way to 'find your style' since accuracy is less important when painting them.
