Hi Loish , I need it to hear this so much, especially from someone with your experience , I feel my brain is yelling to create art that I change my career path from engineering to Animation , just completed a Masters degree that studied online during the pandemics and I’m just learning all about this industry. I hope to make time on my life to create art because it feels like a need for my brain ♥️

I’m from Veracruz Mexico we met at Lightbox expo ! 😄

I really loved the tutorial, so much so that I took notes. <3

Thank you Loish for this tutorial. It help me a lot. My comfortable zone are portrait and I have solid process in Procreate and also with pencil and ink with traditional art supplies. I just need fine some good brush in Procreate with whom I work well. And need focus on finalising rough sketch and ideas and also draw more from imagination and trying more stylisation studies.

I cannot express how much I needed this video right now. Last night I found some of my old artwork and it was very amateur, but I remember thinking at the time that I was really great. Of course I began panicking, thinking "Well, WHAT IF you're not any good now! And you're overvaluing yourself!" Thankfully, this video came at the perfect time. It forced me to recognise how far I've come and that I deserve to have confidence in my general ability, even if there are improvements to be made. Thank you for sharing, Lois!

Loish

so happy to hear that! i think it's also worth noting that when you enjoy your process and are vibing with your own art, it's something that shows - even if it might be amateuristic. people might enjoy it regardless of skill level! which is another reason not to be too harsh on yourself!

Loish

when you have a comfort zone in place, it's so much easier to think about how to move forward from there!

Hello, I’m in art school now, and my teachers also dislike my art because it’s not realistic. I keep getting stuck trying to make it as realistic as possible and often feel sad when I can’t see my stylization on it. I completely understand when you mention this topic on your video. Love your work! Thank you for taking the time to create these videos. ❤️

Loish

so sorry to hear that! realism is not for everyone. it definitely didn't always appeal to me, I prefer stylized art by far!

Omg this is the video I needed today, thanks so much for organizing all the thoughts and clearing ideas out. Hearing you talk about this things and reading your books is super refreshing. I feel like at some point I have gone through the battles of each of your roadmap steps, I guess the last two are the boss fights that I never seem to win, or at least I don’t feel like a win cause I lack patience and I always feel like I am slow (not in doing, but in thinking things out too much and then not remembering the solutions I come up with on future pieces) and the voice I feel like I want to create my own voice but I get caught up in doing client’s work all the time (I like that client work too and I have a voice there, but it’s not my own thing 100%)

Wow, thank you so much for this tutorial, it really helped me evaluate my own artistic growth and decide on what to do next. Great content!

2023-05-16 03:36:35 Thank you so much for this tutorial! This was such a masterclass on the creative process and so applicable to more than just art, but really helped me understand that I can be both frustrated AND hopeful/optimistic about my trajectory as an artist. We appreciate you and the work you put into these videos <3

Wow oh wow! You have an amazing brain! The way you organized all these thoughts and experience into a Master class it’s unbelievable. I did an MFA and ever since I graduated I have been stuck in a rut because of how insecure my professors made me feel. Every single thing you said struck a chord with me. Thank you so much!!!!

2023-05-16 03:36:35 Thank you so so much for mentioning mental health. <3 No one does and it was THE THING stopping my improvement. Oh, and may I ask for the graph image file? I want to translate it :>

This was a great talk. Im currently in my construction phase and finding new ways to work and get slowly more proficient. It's sometimes a hassle, ngl but when it becomes too much I try to just find other things or go back to my initial drawing methods just for the time being.

Really enjoyed this Loish, thank you for making videos like this. I find myself circling between 1, 2, and 3 most of the time. I reached the conclusion that spending a lot trying to make a piece extra polished wasn't worth it when my construction is always all over the place, so went back to figure fundamentals and I'm trying to ggo from there. Same with learning how to use the tablet or even pen and pencil! One of the things that has helped me to grow a bit, and that you've mentioned other times, is drawing more regularly. And with this, funny enough, I mean sitting down to do studies and sketches most days -- even though I don't produce the same amount of "finished" pieces I used to. I still have a long way to go. I also find myself not having a clear focus on what I like, so I go back to copying master artists for sketches mostly. Only value, just copying the construction while I think about what makes it work. Trying to keep it simple! It's hard work though. I get super frustrated when I only manage to make unexpressive figures on my own. I have gotten a bit lost in the way, I think, and I find that what used to be my comfort zone doesn't look well enough for me to want to resort to it when in trouble. Hence again, me copying master artists and going back to figure fundamentals hoping to fix this a bit so that I can enjoy the scribbling again. But really liked how you explained all of this, it helped me feel better about where I am and where I want to go.

Loish

I'm glad it helped! I think it's natural to cycle between different phases of inspiration / direction. I've definitely felt unfocused quite often for all sorts of reasons. I think as long as you're willing to sit down and re-align your goals from time to time, you should find your "flow" again!

Loish

that's a great approach! nothing wrong with going "back" to what we know from time to time. I feel like we're always learning even when we're just sticking to what we know best!

Loish

I'm glad you liked it! here's the image I used although there's many other versions of it out there: https://64.media.tumblr.com/94fcf51b469b5ec43f0a9b817926b55b/tumblr_inline_pckh1qGCrd1t7wpg9_1280.jpg

Loish

I'm happy to hear that Beatriz! sometimes I think art schools have a secret mission to just minimize the number of people that enter the industry. I hear so many stories where they destroy so many people's relationship with art!

Loish

I'm glad you liked it! client work can be a huge distraction, I definitely know the feeling and it's still a struggle. but it's also a form of artistic growth! I hope the video helps you to be more patient with yourself :)

You know what's great, or funny timing, is that the section of messing with your tools and getting acclimated to the apps/utensils etc., is playing while I'm literally doing that with brand new assets I had just gotten on CSP. And in all honesty, I'm getting the hang of trusting that process. It's a nicer feeling than previous, where my XP-PEN intimidated me more than my IPAD and I'm getting the hang of the complexity of it all. Thanks for the encouragement and perspective!

Loish

glad you like it! it can be mentally draining to get used to new tools and that's discouraging to a lot of folks, it always helps me to realize it's just part of the growth process.

This was wonderful. Sometimes it really feels like you just don't know wth you're doing and this made me feel so much better about being on the right track! Thank you Loish ❤️

Genuinely think this might be the most valuable tutorial I have ever heard, and definitely your very best at merging practical application with a message of self-analysis AND self-compassion. You’ve really given words and labels - or more simply, CLARITY - to a cyclical journey I have been on seemingly forever, making me feel like returning to it time after time was a consequence of my inability and disfunction rather than a natural course of expansion. As usual, I love how this Patreon of yours is really so much more than a simple sharing of art and tutorials - you feel very much like a fisherman teaching people to fish rather than handing over a fork and some butter. I feel flooded with new ways of thinking - influenced by your tutorials but always enhanced and evolving with my own voice - that not just impact my own art, but also the way I look at myself and the rest of the world. In the end, an awful lot of words just to say Thank You for this video, and all the videos and work you put into this community! It affects more than you know!

I only recently became a Patreon, but I've been following you and your art since around 2009. You've been a huge inspiration to me before, and I've learned a lot from you when I first started digital art. Now, I've discovered all these fantastic resources from you to learn actively, which makes me incredibly happy! Dealing with some mental issues like anxiety, depression, and art block myself, it's often very challenging for me to draw and find the motivation because of that negative self-talk you mentioned. However, your motivating, inspiring, and easygoing manner inspires me so much to simply experiment and develop a fun flow for my art! I'm very grateful to you for that!

Loish

Thanks so much for your support and for becoming a patron! I’m so happy to hear that my videos help you. ♥️ overcoming art block and mental health struggles is a slow process and every step counts! Be gentle on yourself 😊
