It’s time for this month’s tutorial! This one is about simple exercises to do when you are short on energy, time, or inspiration. I feel like all artists run into situations like this from time to time. Those of us who can allocate a lot of time to drawing might somtimes feel burnt out or drained, and those of us who have less time for drawing struggle to make choices on what to spend their precious time on. So for this tutorial, I demonstrate six exercises you can do in those situations. Here’s a list of them:

SHORT ON INSPIRATION

  • Draw simple, intuitive shapes
  • Try a different medium from what you know
  • Redraw an older piece

SHORT ON TIME / ENERGY

  • Simplify your workflow to focus on one thing
  • Draw the same subject in different styles
  • Limit your tools to maximize your subjects

I go through these exercises fairly quickly because I wanted to demonstrate the idea behind them rather than the technique. However, if you want to know more about the technique behind the demos, I have more detailed tutorials that explain the process for them! Here’s a list:

  • Creating interesting & flowy shapes: This tutorial talks about shape language and how it can influence your entire process, from initial sketch to rendering. It expands on the ideas that I talk about in the first exercise. Find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-flowy-64260217
  • Sculpting with color: This tutorial runs you through the sculpting with color workflow, which is also something I reference in the first exercise. Find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-with-53897099
  • Creating vibrant skintones: This is a more expanded version of the exercise where I simplify my workflow to focus on one thing, and talks about how I choose colors to make skintones look more vibrant and ‘alive.’ Find it here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-vibrant-55315596
  • Creating flowy & dynamic lines with ink: This tutorial expands on the tools and techniques I use to create inked artworks, which is something I quickly demonstrate in the last exercise (limiting your tools). Find the inking tutorial here:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-flowy-56706948
  • Using the lasso tool to ‘paint’ (step-by-step): This resource shows you the steps involved in using the lasso tool and gradient to paint, which is something I do in the first exercise. Find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-36570445

I also touched on mental health topics a little more in this one, since I feel like having limited time or resources for drawing tends to foster negative thinking. The irony is that boosting our confidence and having a positive mindset is really important to artistic growth, and is therefore extra important to have in these situations! So I give some tips and ideas for addressing our mental health during drawing sessions like these.

The subtitled version is coming right up in a minute! I hope you enjoy this tutorial and as always, feel free to share your thoughts or feedback anytime!

I’m so excited to watch this!! I needed a topic like this to get back into being passionate about learning.

I wish we could have a way to share the overall message here without sharing its content. This is the essence of what makes you stand out among so much training on the Internet and this healthy point of view deserves attention. Thank you for this article, Loish!

I am short on both, so I can’t wait to watch it ☺️ Thank you!!!

Every time I watch one of your "about working" tutorials I feel like I want to show them to people I work with. The way you blend in discussion about state of mind is REALLY something many folks beyond art work could really benefit from. You really allow for flexibility in approach by treating the way someone feels at the time as just another variable to address but not latch on to. Many folks I see day to day, especially younger ones either attach to their current state of mind or hope to ignore it all together. Your approach is so much more healthy, and ultimately productive. I say all that full well knowing this has been a habit of yours as far back as I can recall but I really felt it today. I know I have a tendency to entirely ignore where my head is at when I am approaching a task. It is only when I get totally stuck in the task do I stop to think "hey man, go for a walk and get your noodle right." :D As always, thank you so much for all that you do! p.s. I am now on my second pass through of the new book / and all the stuff that came with it perks wise. The level of attention you put into all of this is remarkable even with your already lofty standard. :D

The level of precision and care that you put into your tutorials has me slack jawed yet again. I fully appreciate the perspective that you've given us in all of your tutorials, but this one specifically as it can definitely be hard to maintain the gumption to grow artistically amidst a busy and/or exhausting lifestyle. For me, personally, it is so important to my mental well being to be able to create when the time presents itself so the techniques and value you've presented here are enormous and will be put into practice asap! ty & hi5.

so sorry about that simon! the list in this post is fully up to date now: https://www.patreon.com/posts/64518198

Hi everyone ! I'm new to patreon and I'm excited to be a part of this community. I'm surprised to hear that Henri also talk to other people like you 😆 and so relieved to finally not be the only one to be overwhelmed by artblocks. I really want to improve and these ideas will definitely help me. Can't wait to participate to art challenge with you all !

Thank you Loish! This was extremely useful, especially the skin tone practice and the deer sketching exercise. Really gotta try those. I’m one of those artists who currently doesn’t have a ton of time in a day so those seem great and can be done quickly. Also look forward to the upgraded patreon 🙌🏼

Wow, this is exactly what I need right now! I don’t have tons of time, and when I do, I just freeze when I think about all the things I could do.

Awesome! I'm really happy to see you talk about bad overproductivity habits. I'm slowly learning to take pauses and time to rest, so this video is coming at the right time ! Thank you so much for your tips! ^^

I love when you talk to us about your process and your struggles. One of the things I always struggle as a self-learner is being allowed to, let's say, struggle, fail, and be a person all around. It seems like artists must be perfect, inspired, all-round creative machines... It feel so liberating listening to you say sometimes you don't want to draw, or you want a break, or that you're not inspired... I also enjoyed the exercises a lot, will try them out. Don't think they are super simple -- Well. Maybe they are for you :))) I've barely started thinking about stylizing and using shapes, so the cloud exercise is something I really want to try :D

Thank you for this weekend treat. It came just at the right moment too! I spend way too much time on the phone with some customer service last week and felt a bit like a robot on low battery as a result. Quick exercises are just the remedy for that. 🙂 I love the stylization one.

Loish

Ah yeah, I have a friend who did customer service for a while and she said it was very draining! I can imagine it takes time to recover from that.

Loish

thanks for your kind words! i guess that's what social media kind of does.. makes it look like artists are being constantly productive, creative and inspired. folks are just less likely to share their struggles or burnt out moments there so it seems like they never have them, but it's actually totally normal to go through dips and moments of low inspiration!

Loish

thanks so much for joining on! Henri sure talks to a lot of people haha :') glad you enjoyed the tutorial!

Loish

thanks so much cluis! really appreciate that you backed the kickstarter and also the kind words here! I've definitely struggled with the feeling that my mindset was causing harm to my creativity and that there was nothing I could do about that. only later did I learn that I could work on the mental side of things and that I am more flexible than I thought I was :) so this is always something I want to tell others about in case it helps them.

Hi Loish!, non drawing related but was curious..what is the tool you use to make your schedules?(min 1,27)thank u

Loish

i'm using a google spreadsheet for that! generally i use google for all productivity things. i use calendar for day to day planning, tasks for my to-do lists, spreadsheets for overviews, and docs for brainstorms/plans! i even use slides to maintain a more general overview of my yearly calendar, but it's kind of an unconventional use of it haha. maybe i should do a little walkthrough of that sometime!

I like the naming of inner critic tip. It reminds me of the Pixar movie Luca, where Alberto tells Luca to silence the 'Bruno' in his head by sayning 'Silenzio Bruno!' :D what helps for me, when my inner critic is really bad, is trying to identify where its comming from. Is it something i have been told before, or is it me comparing myself to others and so on. And then telling myself, just like Loish says, that i dont agree with it. It really helps alot, escpecially if you keep doing it when that voice pops up. :)

Loish

yes, sometimes knowing the source can create some distance between us and that voice! good tip.

2023-01-16 05:54:27 After crushing through the majority of the tutorials I liked to see before the tier change, and getting absolutely overwhelmed with some freelance work next to my full-time job.. I finally came back to patreon and this was such a thoughtful reminder to be gentle to myself and allow space to fail and grow, try out new things. Thank you for sharing your opinion on the over productivity culture & giving me some tools for attainable goals <3
