After doing the tooth and mouth studies from last month, I wanted to try doing some character sketches (using reference) where I applied more details around the teeth and mouth while still keeping a stylized quality to the sketches. I usually just draw one unified tooth with a chip here or there but for these I really wanted to convey a little more realism. It was fun! I think it elevates the sketches to a higher level of believability. What’s your approach to drawing teeth in your character portraits?

Great studies! I usually paint tooth starting with a reduced opacity off-white stroke. Then I "sculpt" each teeth with my beloved smudge tool, trying not to get crazy with details in shadow areas. Last I add values to get the actual volume and tone right. A bit of blue and yellow often makes it. Final touch: the almost invisible white sparkle! Tooth aside, I like how you shaped the skulls too! Also I noticed your sketches are made of less and less strokes lately, which is so impressive! I hope someday I'll achieve your level of mastery ♥️

On average how long and how often do you do specific studies like for instance teeth? Do you do an hour a day for 3 days or a week an hour per day Do you do an hour a day for 3 days or a week an hour per day? And how many different subjects do you study at one time?

Oooooh, these are fantastic!! Hmmm, when it comes to teeth, I tend to look at the composition of the picture to see if adding details like teeth really…adds anything? Like if I’m drawing a face with an open mouth, and it’s not a key part of the whole piece, I’ll just make the teeth a basic white strip and call it a day haha

These are amazing! You really blow my mind with each drawing!!

Wow, I agree, the more detailed teeth really add a snap of realism/believability to a sketch even if it's otherwise stylized! That's a neat trick, I'll have to remember that. I draw a lot of animal/anthro characters in a 'cartoon realism' style with lineart, and for sharp-toothed characters it's easy to just draw a jagged line with maybe a bit of gum detail to make them look snarly. I'm still at a bit of a loss for how to handle human/flat teeth though! The extra hard one is doing a grin on a species that doesn't have a full set of teeth, like a sheep!

I love these so much! I love the incorporation of teeth and gums in artworks. Paired with your style and color work, I think you nailed it! ❤️

I feel like detailed teeth would work on an anthro character because it only adds to the personality and believability! But i guess it depends on the style you're using.

hey justin! i usually spend about 2-3 hours on a study session. I try to do about 4-5 study sessions a month, which I plan differently each month depending on my plans! I try to limit studies to one topic per session otherwise it gets a little too scattered for me.

good tips, avoiding pure white and going for other hues can make them look more natural!

oh I LOVE how you did these! I usually avoid drawing teeth (aside from a recent woodcut-style piece where the expression would not work without them) but this definitely makes me want to try

Ohh these are amazing! I often just do a hint of a gum line, kinda comic book style. The one time I tried to make teeth a bit more realistic it just came out weird lol. But seeing these make me want to give it another shot sometime. This is one that I've been working on that has that: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXhNo0SruwK/

They turned out great!

It definitely works best with sharp-toothed characters and animals known for thefor distinct teeth (rodents, equines, etc). I've seen people go too far with the anthropomorphization in a realistic style where they give like, a photorealistic deer photorealistic human teeth, and that does NOT work haha. But I think you can find a good spot to balance it and I'd say what you have here is pretty much it!

They look awesome! And I thought it was a very interesting and good idea to have teeth studies. I hadn’t seen that before, but it does make sense.
