Finally finished this painting that I first created a rough version of back in March! I’ve been stuck in a pattern of over-rendering my paintings lately, so for this one I wanted to take a more minimalistic approach and keep the feel of the original rough version intact without painting over it too much.

One thing that really had a huge impact was copy/pasting a picture of a frozen lake onto the ice, and setting that layer to overlay. It felt a bit like cheating, but it worked so well that I had to keep it in there. It just instantly created that unique ice feeling: smoothness but also cracks and tiny details at the same time. In the images above you can see what the painting looked like before and after adding this texture to the image! I ended up painting over it in many areas to blend it in with the painting. I’m working on putting together a process video for this painting for those who want to see how I made this ~ hope you like it and have an amazing weekend everyone!

Ah this is gorgeous!! I don't think its cheating, look at all the concept artists who use photo bashing in their daily workflow :) I think it looks amazing, and would not even had known you added the photo. Amazing work!

This is stunning! I had a long and hard day at work and seeing this now has lifted me up a bit :) so gorgeous, I love the texture and I don't think overlaying photos in digital work is cheating, it's just another technique that has to be used in the right way. I would be happy to see the process of this piece.

This is one of your most beautiful paintings. Also, that photo of the frozen water is wonderful. I am fascinated with the blue ice.

This is wonderful Loish! Looking at it gives me this immense sense of scale of the icy lake, the depth and darkness of the icy waters beneath. I can almost HEAR the ice cracking in that foreboding way it does in films, but here it feels awesome because the character seems to me superpowered (to me) so she's maybe doing a superhero landing hehe. I'd love to see a proces video! And while I sympathise with doing things that 'feel like cheating' I think it's all about working smarter not harder. For me the rule of thumb is: if it's not plagiarism, it's not cheating! It's part of the creative process! :D

So looking forward to the process video!

"andy illustrates" said it perfectly. Just want to add a heap more enthusiasm. There are previous "ice" works that are really compelling. I like the great sense of depth.

Loish

thank you! it was intended as a kind of superhero landing :)
