Here’s some stuff that’s far outside of my comfort zone! Together with some fellow art friends, we went to the zoo and drew some of the animals from life there. I totally cheated with these sketches, though - I drew the initial shapes and forms from life, but then later when we were having lunch, I looked up photos of the animals and filled in the details from reference. The fish and the bottom left sketches of the chimpanzees were fully drawn from life, however! These were a bit more slow-moving which made it easier for me to capture them.

Fun fact: the large fish that I drew is a pacu fish, which have weirdly human teeth. It’s actually pretty terrifying to see :’) Don’t google it!

Love how you’ve captured them, and especially love the honesty of finding reference after! The chimpanzee on the fourth picture looks like he is looking at his phone. 😂

Well now I HAVE to Google it! LOL 😂 These sketches are beautiful! So much great expression! Thank you for sharing them!

Love the shapes 😻! And there's no cheating in art (I need and emoji of Bob Ross to put here)

something about non-mammals with human teeth is so unsettling :')

haha yes that was the vibe I got from him too. it's weird how human-like chimps are.

Ok, so obviously I google it, and I am going to have nightmares about that fish - it feels VERY Anihilation (if you've read the book?). Basically animals that have human features... These sketches are so amazing though!!

i actually have read that book! i have the whole trilogy although i haven't gotten far into the second one yet. have you read all three?

Yeah, I read all three and each one is so different in style. I definitely felt much more drawn into the first one because it felt so huge and otherworldly and fascinating. Then the second I found it hard because it felt the exact opposite: claustrophobic and bureaucratic and just eugh everything I think working in an office might feel like! Then the third is more open again - it's closer to the first but less intense, it feels more traditional in terms of writing style and is a smoother read (it was to me anyway!).
