One thing that I’ve kind of missed doing lately was some quick stylized portraits. I’ve been doing a lot of studies lately, but I kind of lost my flow when it comes to rougher portraits in my own style. I feel like I fall back on realism too much and have lost the ability to turn them into “loish characters” when I draw them. So I got myself a new small moleskine book and did a few portraits over the last weeks. These are some of my earlier attempts where I wasn’t really sure where I was going with the stylization. When I drew the last one, it finally ‘clicked’ and I started to feel more comfortable with stylizing them.

I also added some color to a few of them in Photoshop, again with the focus on stylization. Even though this is major comfort zone stuff, it’s been really fun to do. I’ve really missed doing quicker sketches like these, but was somehow not able to do it because I was too much in the ‘realistic study’ mode and not enough in a ‘drawing characters’ mindset! Hope you like them.

Would love to see the video process for some of these, if you ever choose to record some. :) They're awesome!

I love the linework! I struggle with hatching so much! Great work! :)

So lovely 😍 do you have process videos of those crystal statue portraits you did? Those were breathtaking

It's a nice change of scenery, I like your environment studies as well though, as someone stuck in realistic mode. I'm happy you found some time to do something in your style again.

These are really great, I struggle with keeping my work stylistic…. Hearing that you also find it difficult when you’ve been doing a lot of realism studies is kinda nice…it makes me feel there’s hope for me yet! However, I don’t see the struggle, your sketches look effortless & definitely stand out as Loish pieces…. I’d know that without seeing your name attached.

Aw I love these! The bright vibrant colored ones are amazing too! And I'll echo what others have said, these all feel very 'Loish' styled to me. You have a very distinct way of drawing eyes and lips, I can almost always tell its your work <3

Loish forgot how to "loish" for a minute? :D I have a great patreon you can support that will take you step by step through the process of learning how to Loish :D Great stuff as usual!

Stunning ! I always fall back on realism myself too since it’s what I started with and still find it difficult to stray from it when stylizing! If you hav any advice on how to maintain style through a piece without over relying on realism I’d love to hear your opinions!🤍 thanks for sharing

Mimi

😂 girl you are so lucky to have the “my drawings are too realistic” as a problem”. Wish that was my issue!! :)

Loish

haha, i guess that's one way of looking at it. I just think it's always frustrating when the outcome doesn't match the intent!

Loish

i think that would be a good topic for a future tutorial! but in the case of these potraits, it helped me to sketch out the pose based on the ref, but then put the ref away and do the rest from imagination. it kinda forced me to be a bit more creative!

Loish

thank you! and yes, haha, I really did forget how to 'loish' and it was unsettling :')

Loish

thanks! I was so disappointed in myself while drawing these haha. I'm glad it doesn't show at least.

Loish

I haven't created a process video for that but I think I did record the process, so I might do it soon!

Loish

thanks cristian! I didn't record it but I think I will make another one fully recorded. maybe as a topic for a tutorial.

🤦‍♀️ Artists…… we are our own hardest critics! I would be ecstatic if my sketches were this amazing. 😊

Sometimes it’s good to re-calibrate after a long time of studies or a burnout. I find comfort zones can be a good reset button!

These are so beautiful! I know you mentioned you've been inspired by eleeza recently and looking at these I can see that! Those "random" flowy lines and soft shading fit beautifully into your sketching style!

Moleskin Sketchbooks Totally Rule! Their pages are a bliss to work with when sketching.

Loish
