More building sketches, this time in Photoshop, which instantly felt more natural and intuitive to me than drawing in Procreate. One of these is based on a town in the South of France, taken by me:

…and the other one is based on a photo of Stone Town in Zanzibar, which I have been to in the past but didn't take any good reference images! I found this specific picture on unsplash (https://unsplash.com/photos/VUrE8u516pY):

For both of these I used the technique of blocking out the simple shapes first and making sure the color was right before layering on detail gradually. I used color dynamics settings on the brushes to get some nice color variation, which worked out better in the Zanzibar one and is a great trick for creating some more vibracy. I still feel like something goes wrong in the detailing process and that a lot of the expressiveness of my initial rough version is lost, but I feel like I’m moving forward!

yay! it's so fun to play around with! I have three tutorials in procreate, I guess chronological order would make the most sense: • My workflow in procreate: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-video-42911573 • Painting & rendering in procreate: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-in-44878024 • Drawing environments in procreate: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-drawing-59043003

Ooh these are great! I can really see how much more comfortable you're getting with buildings :) It takes me FOREVER to draw structures, so its a goal for me this year to get better at drawing them as well.

Unsplash is such a treasure trove of reference materials! I love the texture on the buildings and the interesting shape and softness of the cloud at the back.

Loish

thank you! and yes, the quality is incredible for being royalty free.

Loish

thanks! i'm trying to add a lot of personality and gesture to them, since I can't pull off really tight perspective anyways :')

Loish

thank you! I didn't record the process for these, because I was just too insecure about the workflow and recording it would have made me feel even more on edge. but I'll definitely be doing more of these types of drawings and recording the process in the future!

Loish

thanks! it's the same for me, it's so time consuming. i'm trying to figure out ways to be quicker and more efficient with setting them down.

These look wonderful! Also thanks a lot for sharing the website, definitely will check it out! Do you know how long you took for these studies?

Loish

Each one of them took me about 3-4 hours to do. I hope to be more efficient in the future as I become more comfortable with the workflow!
