For anyone who missed yesterday's livestream with Stan from Proko TV, it's up on Youtube so you can watch it anytime!

We talked a lot about different exercises you can do to improve your skills and find your style, and for those who want to do more with those tips, the warmups & exercises for improving your skills tutorial delves a lot deeper into some of the ideas I mention during this interview! For those who want to know more about the Procreate drawing process in this video, I have a Procreate tutorial that explains this workflow in a little more detail.

Hope you enjoy it and definitely ask away if you have any questions! Have a lovely weekend everyone ♥

So happy you recorded this, it touches so many topics that can make or break a beginner artist! :)

Great one, though Stan could paid more attention. :D I always feel greatly inspired and eagre to be (even) more organised after listening to you talk. One question; you often mention podcasts you listen to during working times. Any good suggestions? :) Thank you!

Thank you very much Loish :)

I tuned in for the first hour or so live, but it seemed like it was less about stylization and more about just answering random questions Proko read to you, and it seemed like you didn't really have time or a chance to go into any topic in depth. Pretty much everything was stuff you've said already in Patreon videos - which is fine! It's a way for non-Patreon folks to get advice from you and it's a good jumping-off point for more learning (and I appreciate you posting links to other more in-depth videos in the desc here!). I just got a little frustrated because stylization is one of my biggest difficulties and I guess I was hoping you'd have some kind of long but magic answer XD It's hard to feel like there isn't more to creating a desired style than just 'let it happen naturally and maybe do a few exercises'. Maybe I didn't pick up on everything you said - the chat was very distracting - but I'm just wondering if there's a good way to intentionally create a desired style and having it quickly feel natural and not look forced. I don't really like my current style but not sure where to start with getting myself to look at my art differently... Anyway that was a huge ramble, sorry. Thanks for sharing the video with us, and I really appreciate you sharing the in-depth video links since the stream itself seemed like not the right venue for getting deep into details? Since the drawing part is pre-recorded, I'm wondering if it'd be possible for you to take that same process video and do a new voiceover with it explaining what you're doing and while, what intentional choices you're making, etc. I didn't feel a lot of connection between your talking in the video and what was happening on screen, and I feel like I missed out due to being distracted by other comments and by chat. I'll give this video another watch too now that it's recorded and doesn't have chat visible (which was really distracting as I mentioned). More rambling! I'm good at this. Thanks for the video <3

I loved this stream! I think what I learned the most was about studies. Honestly, I never really enjoyed them. And I had a philosophy that we don't need to do them (especially like the fanatics) as if it's the only way to grow. I really believed mileage--or drawing a lot and consistently, especially consciously--was more key to growth, which it has proven to be for me. And to me what was most important to keep me going was to have fun with what I drew, and studies just...weren't fun. BUT THEN what you said about doing studies intuitively, like how you did choosing on the day what you're in the mood to do or curious about, that's the key to making them enjoyable. I also thought your point that studies accelerate your growth was valid and made me redefine my philosophy. I don't think I'm not entirely wrong, but I think I would adjust it to say if you want super fast growth, AND you can remain motivated, grinding out studies may be for you. I still don't think "grinding" is for me. It gives me art block (which is weird because I am addicted to learning). But I think I there's a balance, and what you said in that video gave me the perspective I needed. Thanks, Lois! I'm looking forward to "studying intuitively" like you do. 😁 (sorry for the long message) TL;DR - Studies are cool 😎

thanks for tuning in! the intent of the stream was to answer questions so i think that's why you got that impression :) i don't think there really is a way to intentionally create a desired style and have it feel natural in a short amount of time, it's just something that develops over time as you build your skillset. i think for more in-depth info about style, my best resource is the new artbook! i talk really extensively about how i learned what i learned, and why my style developed a certain way, and i try to translate that into questions for the reader about their own growth and journey!

Loish

you're definitely not alone in that! i think 'grinding' gives any artist artblock eventually, since you're wiring your brain to see art as a struggle and a chore. i think the most growth happens when you find that mix of enjoying something, and learning from something. i'm glad you enjoyed the video :)

Loish

thank you! my favorite podcasts at the moment are "you're wrong about" and "maintenance phase," i like how analytical they are! i also like "this is uncomfortable" and "this american life" and of course true crime stuff like my favorite murder!

I'm pledged for the book, so I'm excited to read it and see what you say there! Thanks!!

Just watched the video on youtube and I really liked your explanation on both portraits you were drawing. And when you said "yes I talked about sculpting in colour" I was like "yes she did, I remember!" 😄 Definitely a bad grade for listening (probably because he was reading the comments) ;)
