This has been quite a rollercoaster of a month for me! It seems like everything is much more intense than usual! Has it been the same for you guys?

Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:

GETTING BACK INTO THE FLOW

After my vacation, it was challenging to get back into the creative flow, especially because my vaccine shot had me feeling exhausted and unable to focus on drawing. I also feel like I’m between phases at the moment, not really focused on any one specific creative goal and therefore not feeling as motivated. However, after spending some time with my sketchbook, I realized how much I missed drawing on paper and using traditional tools. Moving forward, I want to plan a few days each month for some traditional art sessions!

TUTORIAL

This was the first time that I decided to focus my tutorial around a specific challenge or part of my workflow, rather than a really broad topic. I really enjoyed making it and it felt much more contained and specific! I’ll be doing the same thing next month, and will probably be making the tutorial on creating vibrant skintones. Do you struggle with skintones in your art? If so, what do you struggle with?

As always, thanks so much for your support! I'll be sending out links to this month's google drive folder today. If you have any feedback or questions, please feel free to share them with me through a direct message or e-mail to loishh@gmail.com. Any and all feedback is welcome! I hope you’ll continue to be my patron and enjoy the content coming up next month! ❤

Thank you so much for the update and also for the small preview videos on Instagram for the cover of your new book!🙂...So excited for your Kickstarter launch in September!🥳

Hope you had a blast 🥰 The main problem I have trouble is how to choose the shadow and highlight on the skintones.

It was a mess for me this month. Rushing with a lot of things and having no time to relax. I was just downloading your Drive folder, thinking on doing sort of a master study of the whole month, instead of only follow the tutorial

Just dawned on me I sent a rambling email off to the business account like a moron, BUT I really wanted to put this thing in front of you (and whomever else) I just bought this tool because I had grown tired of trying to get a side keyboard macros to work well with photoshop. After about a half hour of playing with it I remembered one of you videos about using all the color adjustment dialogs. This thing has custom built photoshop profiles, and it displays then ON THE CONTROL! I highly advise you take a look, it feels like they made this thing with you in mind. It's a bit pricey for some but I bet the time and hassle you avoid using it, I think it would be worth it. https://loupedeck.com/products/loupedeck-ct/ If you have any questions let me know, I am just starting to get into it, but it is amazing.

Excited for next month's tutorial. Definitely struggle with choosing colors when I shade different skin tones especially darker ones so it'll be nice to see your process with that 😊

Skintones are challenging, indeed! I always end up with something very muddy, it's difficult to combine good balance of skin color, blush and the shadows. I like to learn some new tips how to make them more vibrant! :)

The thing I always struggle with skin tones is when it's in the ambient. You often create skins by using blue and such as a base, but because of the surrounding, our brain knows it's not supposed to be blue in normal light. This is what I always struggle and I always go with the safe colours of skintones, while I wish I could go beyond that.

July is crazy for me atm. I would love to see how to combine gesture and perspective. I feel like theyre kind of opposites that need each other to be maximized and i really struggle with this

July was such a crazy month for me as well, amongst other things the feeling of hollow creatively has been the most annoying thing. As for tutorial ideas, I struggle with masculine figures, especially when it comes to drawing them facially. There are certain like attributes when drawing males or more masculine characters but when you keep different ethnic features in mind as well, it makes it a bit harder. For this reason, I tend to draw a lot of female and feminine characters. So, I'd really appreciate seeing your approach to drawing males or masculine characters and how that differs for you and the things you keep in mind. Happy new month Loish!

I’m really glad you’re feeling better and back to making your beautiful artwork. I’m always inspired to see what you’re working on. When I got my vaccine in April I just wanted to melt into my bed for several days. I had a pretty nice July. I come from the the East coast and now live in an area that has year round beautiful climate. New York summers were hard for me so experiencing a July that’s mostly 74 degrees(Fahrenheit) is both wonderful and surreal. Sometimes when I go to the beach I look around and can’t believe people really grew up this way.

Sometimes during moments of an art fog or drought, drawing in a sketchbook unlocks the art side of my brain again. While I've come to love making digital art traditional sketching always feels more natural to me!

Regarding skin tones, I usually have more trouble with figuring out the tones. For example, sometimes I'm unsure how light or dark to go in certain places if that makes sense. Like how dark the shadows should be or how light the highlights should be, etc. Also, I sometimes end up with everything blended together, so it’s hard to see the different planes and show depth.

Loish

thanks for sharing that! This is a common struggle. I'll definitely try to address it in the tutorial!

Loish

I get that. something about the feedback of the grain of the paper and just.. the physical experience!

Loish

that does sound like a dream. we're having an incredibly rainy summer so far haha. it doesn't really feel like summer sadly!

Loish

it looks really cool! i'm still really happy with my keyboard shortcuts for now but i'll probably look into this at some point :)

Loish

that sounds fun! you could apply the tutorial workflow to all of the artwork I made, pretty much :)

Loish

thank you!! I'm excited too! I'm about 90% done with the book right now!

Yeah, tbh after thinking about how well you know all the commands and work arounds in PS it would prolly just slow you down :D. So far the things I have found most useful are using it for opacity/flow, brush size, and various view controls. The color tool page is pretty neat but I have yet to fully understand how it is configured. Most of my need for it is I like to work in fullscreen mode, menus kind of annoy me :D
