Hey guys! Hope you all had a lovely weekend. I mentioned last month that I'd love to do a Q&A session with you all about artistic style. What would you like to know about this topic from me? It can be about my own style, or style in general. I'd love to hear your questions!

You can post them below, send them in a private message here on patreon, or email them to me at loishh@gmail.com! I will probably do the Q&A session on thursday, so please send over your question before then ~ thanks so much everyone!

Hi Loish! Thank you for all you share! I would like to ask you how to choose your style? I'm a children books illustrator, but I work in several styles because my clients often ask me to draw in more cartoon style. I like it! I like drawing for kids. But I like much more adult style with not finished shapes and sketch lines. Is that ok to work in several styles for money or it's wasting of the time?

Hi Lois, in what ways have your interests, experiences and overall sense of taste outside of your work influenced your work?

Anonymous

Who are/were your biggest style influences? (you are on of mine :D )

What are your thoughts on incorporating elements of historic art styles (Art Nouveau, Japanese ukiyo-e prints, etc) into your own personal style?

Hi Loish, do you ever feel pressure to draw a certain topic or style because it is trending, or do you tend to draw what inspires you at any given time?

Hey, thanks for this! What are your thoughts on doing 'style studies' of other artists to improve your own skills with style aspects you want to incorporate? Have you ever done them? If so, what did or didn't you get out of them? How do you separate wanting a certain 'look' in your art from wanting to have good anatomy and color theory and stuff? Do you just fudge it for the sake of style or how do you incorporate technical skills into more stylized art? Has your desire for the look of your art changed over time, or have the changes been more organic? What are some of the phases you went through, and what were your inspirations for each iteration? Do you think you're done changing now and happy with the look of your style as is (pending learning better technical skills over time as we all do) or do you think it might change again in the future?

Loish

that's such a good question! I'll quickly answer it here: I try to draw what inspires me, but I do browse social media a lot so I'm sensitive to trends! I'll ignore trends i don't like but some stuff is really fun, like toonme or 6 fanarts challenge, so i'll do those. I guess the short answer is that I only hop on trends that I like :)

Loish

i'll answer this quickly here: i think that gives a ton of added value to your art. the old masters have so much to teach us and having older influences can elevate your work to make it timeless. but i don't see it as a requirement!

Loish

aw thanks! i'll talk about it in the video but my main influences are alfonse mucha, disney (esp. the little mermaid) and aurore demilly.

Loish

that's a really good question! i'll talk about it more in the q&a but I do think that it's ok to have mutliple styles. if you're someone who enjoys doing that, i think it's essential to do it, because you have to keep exploring and enjoying what you do!

Hi Lois, thanks for this q & a! I have a few questions. The first one is, how do you maintain a similar style across traditional and digital media? I know your work is mostly digital, but for some past work like brushtober, you clearly are skilled in traditional art too! I am a primarily digital artist that got my start with traditional media, and when I went to paint the other day, I felt like it looked nothing like my other (digital) work... How do you explore new concepts while maintaining a similar style? (This can be either technical concepts or like, themes/ subject matter). I have heard some artists say that you should just keep drawing, and your style will eventually make itself seen through your work. While this might be good advice, I've also heard others say you can work to create a cohesive style. Do you have any advice on developing a style? Are there any special art concepts, like color/ line weight/ etc that might help an artist develop a unique, cohesive style? (Also, this is totally an aside, sorry for such a long comment, but I feel like in a sense, art school encouraged me to not have a style. Now that a professor isn't grading my art and I can lean into bright color palettes and abstract shapes, I feel like my work has a lot more personality!)

Loish

these are all such great questions! I will try to address them in the q&a (about to start recording it!)

Hi Loish, thank you for this video, like always! Question: Can you think of artists who don't settle on one style. Is that more or less difficult than choosing one? In the film world there are artists who pick a style and they're known as auteurs but then you have someone like Steven Soderbergh who is always pushing boundaries. He filmed an entire movie on an iPhone a few years ago, as an example. Thank you!

Loish

hey tessera! I don't know a whole lot of artists who have multiple styles that I can name here. Most of the ones I've met are in-house artists at a game or animation studio that can adapt to all different kinds of projects! they aren't as active on social media but they find work in the industry through their portfolio and versatility. i hope that answers your question :)
