Here’s the result of a sketch session where I challenged myself to draw a little faster than I usually do. I also did a thing that I find super difficult and terrifying: drawing with solid lines, without establishing the basic shapes with a soft pencil brush first. Just going straight into it and committing to the lines I draw. It’s very counter-intuitive for me!

In general with sketches like these, I feel like the more detail I add, the less interesting the sketch becomes. On the other hand, the less time I have, the less I’m able to capture the distinctive details. There’s a sweet spot between the fast sketches and the longer sketches where I manage to focus on the movement, without sacrificing too much detail.

Indeed,..! I too feel the same when it comes to fast sketches. It stays mysteriously appealing without much details..

OMG this came at the right moment for me! I was just studying your sketches these days to see if I can capture some of the softness and fluidness of your lines.

Awesome! and I feel you, going straight in with hard lines is TERRIFYING to me lol. I often have two or three steps until I have the finalized lineart!

These are great! I have been struggling with these types of fast drawings for a while now. I would love to see how you attack them. Any chance we could get a video of you doing one of these sessions?

When I would draw in figure drawing class pre iPad or digital times, I made myself draw with a sharpie since when I used pencils I could not decide anything. This reminds me to take some time daily to do that exercise again. Such amazing work.

Really love LOVE your sketches and rough work! They're always so dynamic and full of life! I'd love to see some tips on how you approach lines and strokes to capture so much motion!

I really love this idea for studies! And as always, love your sketches. Always very motivating for me to see your process.

Loish

thank you! I'm so glad you see motion in them, I was worried they were too stiff because of the going-straight-to-linework approach. my pose tutorial has some tips for maximizing movement: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-video-38377684

that is just so brave i can't believe it :0 i need to try it sometime, although it sounds scary haha.

Loish

thanks so much! I will record the process of one of these sessions some time :)

Loish

yep. sometimes i have a few different levels/layers of sketches before i feel like it's finalized. artists like kim jung gi just blow my mind.

Absolutely helpful! I have a tendency to draw with solid (and stiff) lines. And although you're doing the opposite of what I'm studying, this just let me see the different ways you can approach the linework

Quick sketches really teach the fine difference between being rushed and being in a hurry, don‘t they? I really enjoy the flow of sketches from more sketchy to more detailed in the big picture, with my favorite one being the sketch in the top right. She just has the cutest feet and knees! Also the bowl looks a little like a conch shell in that one, which gives me the subtlest of mermay vibes.

Hey Lois! Are you using any specific website that makes a timed slideshow of poses? Or are you just timing yourself?

Loish

hey lara! I'm just timing myself with a little stopwatch here :) but there are some good sites for setting a timer slideshow!

Loish

glad you like it! i really felt like the ones over on the right were losing all the personality, haha.
